Poll question: Do you guys buy more new knives or used (used as in secondary market, for the purpose of this thread NIB is still "used").

I buy mostly secondary market, in fact the last knife I got new was the Zancudo my wife got me for Xmas. I'd say I get about 85% of my knives used.

Edited for clarity: option 3 "I don't buy people's used crap" is slightly sarcastic, I'm not talking people's beat up/low quality/cheap/busted up "crap", just meaning in general you don't buy used stuff period.

In numbers of knives I buy mostly used. In terms of dollars spent I buy mostly new.

I buy mostly used, unless it's gonna b a safe queen for the collection. You can find some really good deals here on the exchange.

I don't see a lot of used around here. When I go to local flea markets, what you see is mostly junk and I don't buy used over the internet. I like to see what I'm getting.

The only used knives I'll buy are discontinued or impossible to find. Even then, I usually like to handle them first.

I buy mostly used NIB knives. The cheaper ones (Kershaw) I buy new. I bought the Sebenza new, but I have to buy most of the expensive Golden made Spydercos used, as they are discontinued.

I prefer buying used so I can use them without any guilt. For pieces that I know I won't use, I will keep it as new as possible.

New unless a deal is too good to pass up. Nothing against anyone here, but I prefer to go through an established dealer if at all possible. If I do buy used, it's generally a consignment item from a brick and mortar store. There are a ton of outstanding and upstanding individuals on here, but I'm very wary of the risk/reward equation.

Of the more than a thousand I have bought, many were new and many were used to varying degrees. Some older knives are nearly impossible to get new. Some are possible for a huge premium after a lot of searching. Most of the older ones I bought new in the box I've kept that way and acquired lightly used examples for users to see how I like the pattern. A few patterns I have several dozen examples new spanning many years of production including special orders and limited editions. I suppose you could say it depends on the knife.

Nearly all new. Too hard to tell the fakes now so authorized dealers are the only safe way to go. I sometimes pick up one or two used blades at local gunshows but only rarely.

Codger, I'd love to see some of your classic fixed blades. Wish we could get you collectors to post pics of your 10 favorite USA made fixed blade classics. Heck, I'd probably pay a few $ just to see the pics. BTW - 80% of what I buy is used.

Why buy new when I can get it for cheaper lnib or lightly used on the exchange?

I don't have safe queens and it's easier to carry a pretty knife that already has a few marks on it.

If I end up not liking it I havent devalued a used knife but one that went from new to used is worth less (sometimes considerably!)

I guess it would be different for a discriminating collector, which I certainly am not!

Mostly new, had a few not-so-great experiences with used. But I haven't tried a used knife from this forum yet. I am lucky to have a good retailer with great stock fairly close to me though.

I buy new knives 99.9% of the time. There isn't a used knife market in my country, and if I'm going through the trouble of bringing something all the way from the US, I'd rather it be a NIB knife.

I pretty much only buy new, unless it's a product that's discontinued(like the Kershaw Crown with blue scales, which was a limited run for Walmart) or unless it's a just a really good deal(I found a used Boker in like new condition at the local pawnshop for $15, the cheapest I could find it online was $55, so I went ahead and picked it up).
