Do you buy multiples?

I recently got bit by the GEC bug. I have bought a lot (to me) of their knives in the last few weeks. I like some more than others but some I just REALLY like. I have been carrying a pony jack in antiqued yellow jigged bone a lot. In fact this is a perfect knife in the way it handles and looks. So now that I have found a user...do I buy an identical one to put up? Do you buy users and keepers? Or do you just use everything?

I personally like to have a little variety. I may purchase two similar knives, but I don't tend to purchase more than one of the exact same pattern and handle color. For instance, I have a Pony Jack with a clip and pen in antique yellow bone. I later added a 15 Boys Jack with a spear and pen in rust red jigged bone. To my mind those are pretty close in size and function so I intentionally chose different primary blades and handles.

The only exception was with a couple of Case CV knives, a Peanut and a Small Texas Jack. I bought a second of each of those (after I had owned the first for a while) specifically to experiment with patinas while leaving the originals intact.

With GEC knives it's a bit of a stretch of my knife budget to even buy one at a time. :) But if you have truly found your grail knife for daily carry and want to make sure you have a backup for it in case of loss or wearing it out in 20 years, then it might be a good idea to get a second one.

I have a few that i have multiples of. If you count same model different covers. I have exact multiples of some of the older Winchester Black Box knives of patterns i really like, like the Coffin Jack but that is it.

There are a couple that I duplicates of ( I mean exact duplicates), I have others where I have multiple of the same style (peanuts for example) where I different blades and handles. Steven

No, not me.
I could easily see me get more from one maker if the first one impresses me, but not two of the very same model.
I did buy three CRK's when I joined here, all different.
Now I have moved on to a new maker du jour, my first Rockstead made me look at, and order, other models from them as well:)
And tonight I have started looking for a Gurkha.
Surely, one only needs one of those, right?

Nope, and I don't think I ever will. I've thought of buying backups for two of my most used knives, a #73 and a clip point Charlow. But even then I'm looking at getting a variation, with different covers.

I have only in one case, when the kershaw double cross was discontinued i picked up two as a reserve in case something should happen to my primary. It is such a unusual knife i could not see anyone else making anything like it.

Do you buy multiples?

I wish I could afford to! I would love to buy them all, but my budget is limited to saving for a knife I really like every month or two.

:)

Actual duplicates? Only in one case - a modern knife that I really like that is no longer produced. I bought 2 spares in case of loss or damage.

Multiples? Only a few. For example, I have several 110's that are each different in some respect. But for the most part I only buy individual knives that are different. I prefer variety.

Probably going to end up with 1-2 multiples for the first time within the next year. Another Vic Recruit, my first knife I still own it but I refuse to EDC it as it has too much sentimental value. So another one may be in order unless I can another knife similar enough to fight off the urge to carry it. And I will probably pick up a rough rider or a few of them, than get a higher end knife in the pattern I like is my current plan. I just have to get used to carrying knives in my back pocket as my front pockets tend to drop cellphones and knives if I am not careful, a drawback to the khaki pants I wear sadly.

You mean duplicates? No, not really. I do have more than a few #53's laying around. Diff baldes and scales.

On the Buck 301 I buy variations (Schrade made examples, Camillus made examples, Buck made in CA and ID, and special issues). On other models and brands only when I forget that I already have one! OH

No multiples in my knife collection. I've had a double once when I had the chance to pick one up cheap but sold them both off shortly after. Doubles just don't sit we'll on my mind. I feel it kind of ruins the knife for me for some odd reason. Maybe I have a little one knife man blood in my veins :)

Nah. When I decide to spend the money on another knife (which is fairly often) I want something that I don't already have even if it's just different covers or blade variations.

I do sometimes, it depends on money and price. I just found a Heavy Duty Mora at the flea market, I already had 2 clippers I bought the HD Mora to add to my colection, the wasn't asking too much for it & it's a good knife. So now I have 3 Moras. Sometimes I want a knife for around the house or town, sometimes like the HD Mora they go into my camping pack never to see the light of day until I go to the woods and some of the 2nd purchases get used around the house or put into my EDC. I recently bought a Kabar Dozier for a EDC, I liked it so much I want the one with the tan handle & black blade, there cheap and a good light knife, I might buy the one with the tan handle, and I'm not a big fan of folders.

I buy duplicates of knives and guns, sometimes because when one gets lost or broken etc, it can be very difficult to find a replacement, Especially guns, as I have a few that are not made anymore and I like them. On some folders, I am the same way, as makers often change models and sometimes it's only one model that I like, and I am a bit picky.

A typical example, is I found that I liked one of the AG Russell Texas Ranger Commemorative (large Folder) 2012 models, so after using it for a little while, I bought a second in case I wear out or loose the first one, because if I wait, and need one later, they may not still be available, Just like guns in a survival situation: Two is one, and one is almost none, Either have a spare or spare parts.
