Do you carry a loaner? If you do, what do you carry?

Hey all,

Now that I am starting to own some nicer knives, such as my ZT 0393 and my BM 940-1 (should be coming in the mail today), I am starting to be reluctant if people are asking it to borrow. I have heard horrible stories from this forum and elsewhere, good thing is no friends/family has asked me to borrow my knife yet.

That being said, I am starting to look into the idea of carrying an extra loaner knife, what do you guys carry? A cheapo knife from walmart/gas station/ebay/etc, a somewhat nicer knife, or do you straight up just give your nice knife for them to borrow? Or do you straight up say no?

I do carry a loaner. I have a Gerber EAB razor knife as my main edc, in addition to whatever old slip-joint I'm carrying that day (Queen Country Cousin sodbuster in D2 today). If someone needs a knife I'll let them borrow the Gerber since the blades are replaceable. I don't mind if they ruin a .25 cent razor blade. It's a lot easier to replace that than a 50 year old slip-joint.

Plus the Gerber EAB is about $6 online so if I lose it, it's not a big deal.

I don't really loan my knives out, and will offer to cut things for people.

However I most often have more than one on me, and a few times when I was out somewhere with my dad I offered to let him carry one of mine since he didn't bring one because " I won't need a knife " ( you never know that ) but he declines.
He always carries one for work but I'm pretty sure he rarely carries one otherwise as he mostly stays home when he's not working.

I don't. I lend my knife to people I trust who tell me what they want to cut and I know they use it as if I were to use it myself.

So no using the tip to cut coupons out af a paper laying flat on the sidewalk?

Pfft! Ur not a real gnaif us0r!

I don’t carry a loaner per se, but I have given several certain inexpensive ratchet knives to friends who didn’t carry anything to get them started.

They’re fun to fidget with and I like to break in the springs so they can whip open. I always have a new one on me.

I carry a multi-tool for anything that I don't want to use my good knife for, including lending to others.

The knives I typically carry are neither expensive nor irreplaceable. I have a weekend gig that calls for cutting maybe half a dozen times in an afternoon, and often a passenger will ask me for a knife. No dice. I am happy to make the cut for them, and avoid the incovenience that comes when a knife goes walkabout.

I used to keep an AG Russell simple 3" lockback (a $15 Jarbenza knock-off) that I'd have as a loaner. That is, I still have the knife, I just haven't been carrying it. The other day I handed my Opinel no6 to a friend, to whom I've already given another Opinel. Walked away, and heard "PING!". Yep, he opened it without unlocking it and popped the collar off. I figured he'd remember how to open it. I doubt he's used the one I gave him, since it was for his BOB. At least I know he probably won't do that again. But I think I'll start carrying that AGR again.

The knife is one thing , but nobody else should handle your Batman ! ;)

I let people borrow my knife, if they hurt it I'll just sharpen it it's not really a big deal

Same here! I carry my knives to use. I always thought carrying a loaner knife was a bit petulant. Like when you played with that wealthier only child in the neighborhood where you grew up. "This one is my special knife, and you can't touch it. Here's a crappy one for you to use"
Even when I'm carrying a custom. If it's someone who doesn't usually ask I will sometimes say "You break it, you bought it, and it aint cheap." as I hand it over.
