Do you carry a "pouch" when in the woods or backpacking? Recommendations?

This is as close to a pouch as I have today. I just never felt the love for it and it has sat in a closet for the last couple of years. I opened up the main body and was surprised to find a canteen in it. I have three other bag/packs that step incrementally larger. And my largest pack is just too large.

I have a Max. Falcon ? or something and a medium ALICE that I like for day wanders, which is what I do mainly.

0826161411.jpg I used to carry a maxpedition bag even for shorter hikes and it was just overkill for me. I always have a ton of stuff on me as it is but I like this bag here and even did a video on it recently. I hope it's ok to post it. if not please let me know as I am new here and dont see a rule against it. Of course Ive already changed up the gear a bit in this little kit since this video. I even use the bag at the gym to carry my water bottle and wallet. Plus I feel good having this little bit of gear in the gym as its hard to carry gear in gym shorts and a t-shirt

I carry a nylon bag that is really more of a woman's sport-handbag. My wife calls it my man-purse, but it is nice and light, flat when empty, and can hold a lot of stuff, from chaga and other mushrooms I'm collecting to cameras or tools that don't ride on my belt. It's usually empty when I leave the house and full of stuff I've picked up along the way when I return. Chanterelles and Hen of the Woods are coming into season right now, and it makes a good collection pouch/bag. I use it just for short day-trips when I don't need to be lugging a full pack of camping stuff. It rides on my back with the long strap across my chest, and it is really more of a pouch than a bag or back-pack. Made by Columbia. It's light enough, and rides out of the way enough that it is easy to forget about. Probably looks stupid, but I'm not concerned with appearances, just suitability to my needs.

I carry my pouch in addition to my pack when I'm hunting. I will sometimes leave my pack to do a little walking and like having a few basic items on me. I use a Maxpedition Mini Pocket Organizer.

Yup, always a few basics on me. It's the times I don't bring anything, when I wished I had. So a few basics ALWAYS come with me. I will leave the axe and Mora in the vehicle unless specifically needed. One axe lives there now as I got tired of forgetting it.

Right now I'm looking at the Maxpedition Jumbo Versipack. It seems pretty great, but I'm wondering if you guys could recommend something similarly styled but.....bigger? I'm a giant and I fear it'll look and feel tiny on me.

Maxpedition makes several, and a few are larger. You should be able to see them on their website.

I have a jumbo Maxpedition versi-pack that I have used daily both in the field &For mundane tasks like hauling my lunch to the office. I would highly recommend it. It's also a great travel bag.

I added the CCW Velcro holster for hiking when I am not wearing clothes suitable for a belt style carry. The pack is perfect for me for a day hike. Holds the Scout outdoor essentials: FAK, knife, water, lunch/Snacks, compass, map, light, fire starting equipment, cordage, rain ponch, extra socks, sunscreen, pistol, extra mag/ammo & phone. Very comfortable. I also like that it has a clip on the strap that I can clip my dog's leash to so I can hike hands free. Shoulder-style carry also lets my back breathe on the strenuous, fast paced hikes I do.

A solid piece of gear.

I carry my basics in a Ribz pack, partly to keep things at hand, and partly so I can drop my pack when needed. It works for me to have my individual first aid kit and "overnight" survival stuff at hand, along with my daily use stuff (sunblock, bug-repellent, food) but it also meshes with my bigger FAK which depends on the circumstances of the trip. It helps keep me organized. As far as relying on always having your pack, whatever works for you, but I've proven to myself time and again (either my mistakes or others) that its not hard to get into a situation where you are needing some basics and don't have your big kit. One thing to keep in mind, especially if you are out with other people, is knowing how much they are relying on your skills and knowledge. More than one group has found themselves in trouble because the guy everyone thought was the leader, was really following someone else.

I've used many variations of the same idea but my current one is a maxpedition belt pack ( an octa type I think) that keeps up with things like a fire starter kit and pen with notepad..little things I just don't like sticking in my pockets. It's also easy to slip on my short machete and clip/strap/tie off my field knife of the week. ;) I added a lg size roly-poly to collect edible plants, small sticks, interesting rocks and such but it has been used as a game pouch for field dressed rabbit or squirrel and suffered no damage or even staining after a run thru the laundry. (Open it fully and turn inside out and put in an old pillowcase or some such, then hang or air dry) it's been working good for me the past couple of years. Without the cutlery it's fine for a walk in a city park or into Wally mart (ugh I hate goin there.)

I did have a pic, just took me a few minutes to find it! On this day my RB 3 is left front for cross draw and the role-poly is at the other end.

Statesevens, I would encourage you to get what you want soon, a visit to the maxped website showed that items are on close out or many that are about to be. Mods if this is out of place or verboten here just delete or move as you see fit. Thanks, anrkst

I like the Maxpedition EDC pouches. Different sizes for back pocket, cargo pocket or on belt if needed
