Do you carry a shovel in your BOB?

I have seen the Glock shovels and they do not impress me. The handle is plastic and they do not look like they would hold up. The saw blade in the handle is a nice idea but the saw cut could be more aggressive. The Gerber shovel is much sturdier and better designed. It is an improvement over the original tri-fold shovel. Nothing beats the old wood handled e-tool in ruggedness and reliability but it is heavy and bulky to carry. I will take a look at the CS "Russian" Shovel. I have kind of dismissed them because of the "Spetnaz, Commando, Special Forces, Recon,Ninja" attack shovel Hype. They are reasonably priced and some of the posts on this thread have given them good reviews.

I picked up a Germany Army folding shovel with a pick a few years ago, much sturdier than the US Army issue one. It came with a nice leather sheath, too, so it rides in the truck. Too heavy for backpacking tho'.

I checked prices of the following shovels on Cabela's site. The Glock is $49.95 the Gerber is $29.95 and went to a knife site and found the Cold Steel Russian for $18.95 It seems in my opinion that the Glock is overpriced and the least effective. Most of the posts praise the Cold Steel and it is the cheapest. You could buy two Cold Steels for one clock and have money left over. You be the judge.

Hello all,
I carry a gardeners friend(Jap;hori-hori) that is very similar to the garden tool that udtjim refers to. It's 11 and 1/2", forged from hi carbon tool steel ,shovel shaped, and has some useful serrated teeth to cut branches and harvest roots(lately sassafras roots for tea).About $20 at japanwoodworker.com. Great for the fire pit and lav work.
I've always moved more hard earth with my old surplus small size army pick/hoe than with a shovel, but that could be too heavy.

I replaced my shovel/trowel with a SRKW Camp Tramp. However, due to how and where I work, I no longer am able to carry a large knife so I will go back to the trowel or small shovel.
