Do you carry an Auto?

I believe in most states that one can not carry an auto. Well do you take that chance knowing that 99% of knife owners are responsible citizens?

So, do you drink and drive? Drive too fast? Smoke a little herb? Cheat on your taxes? Be kinda stupid to say one does illegal things on a public forum, wouldn't it?

[You go Jake!]

Hey, it's a pocket knife. They're going to ban ALL one hand openers in the future. I don't consider someone a criminal for carrying a damned pocket knife even if it is *against* the *law* because sometimes, the *law* is *demonstrably absurd.*

That having been said, in answer to your question. No.

But I do not look down on those that do.

Carry what you want. When you want. How you want. Why you want with the exception of hurting another person or depriving them of their Life, Liberty, Property, etc.

Don't do that.

Pretty Libertarian for a Republican huh?

Oh, yeah...forgot. It is perfectly OK to hurt someone that is trying to hurt you or some other, innocent party. Forgot that one.

Carry on...

I carry a BOKER matic (real deal, not conversion) sometimes. It used to be my everyday carry, but its not as strong as my others, also I was afraid I'd do something to mess it up which would be especially bad since the guy who brought it into the country is now in prison so I don't see myself able to get another.

Perfectly legal in Alabama

I think there is a more important issue relative to carrying an auto. While it isn't common, to be sure, there are instances in which an auto can open inadvertently in the pocket and injure the owner. Some autos even have safeties to prevent this, making the knife even slower to open.

Personally, I don't think it's safe to carry an auto whether it's legal or not. I certainly support the appreciation and collecting of auto knives, but I wouldn't recommend actually carrying one. Most of the one hand openers will perform as well or better with practice than an auto and will be perfectly safe to carry. Take care.

I think there are quite a few Autos that would be perfectly safe to carry. All of them? Certainly not...but there are quite a few without the extra safety.

But, to each his own. I carry two Emerson Commanders, faster than an Auto and not quite so risky in the legal area...

I don't carry an auto because of the legal issues, and also becuse a one hand opener, or a fixed blade with a good rig is as fast, or faster, to draw. However, I do carry a dagger. It's a 3" blade by Hartsfield which I use as a keychain and it has a cord that attaches to my pants loop so the knife can be drawn quickly with one motion. (It also makes it very easy to access and pull out my keys.) I am uncomfortable about carrying a knife that may be illegal, but do it mostly because when I had a one sided blade, it was hard to return to the sheath, the knife being symetrical. This one just slides right back no matter which way it's put in.

I don't think I would ever carry an auto legal or not. I want something simpler and more reliable than a spring loaded mechanism. I'm sure that the high dollar quality autos are very very reliable but a mechanism like that just sounds like something with a possibility of going wrong.

Ok..maybe I sound like an old fart with technophobia but when it comes to something as fundamental as a knife I just prefer not to mess about. I'd rather put my trust in a high quality one hander of relatively simple design. My Sebenza is never going to fail me and I just don't trust push button knives.

The legal issue isn't so much a factor. I agree with the other poster who said that the day is comming when all of our one handers may be in jeopardy and when that day comes I am not planning to give up my right to carry one of man's most fundamental tools.

We are all on our way to becomming "criminals" or unarmed sheeple. Take your pick.

I am a newbie at knife collecting been a cop for 24 years playing with guns and started to carry a benchmade auto instead of a folder. Whammo, hooked for life since 1998 and know I am starting to learn. spent too much time collecting guns and started with clone crap and got my ass roasted too many times. Came here where you guys have been GREAT TEACHERS and boy am I learning what a real auto knife is. hell I am learning what a knife is period. Selling guns now and just taking my lessons from you until I can stop buying MT, MOD, Paragon, BM,CRKT, and but my first REAL knife. In NH, only cops, security guards when on duty, hunters when hunting and disabled can carry autos, but who the hell looks and cares when anyone over 18 can carry a howitzer legally....wolfmann@aol.com
PLEASE, keep teaching me, I ams hooked on dem nives foreber and eber. screw guns

my daily carry consists of 12 autos (benchmade, boker, microtech), 5 fixed blades, two cherokee tomahawks, six throwing stars in various pouches, one cane-sword, and one celtic broadsword strapped to my back.
oh, that's just knives, too. forgot to mention my uzi, my 357, and my snubnose .38 special (in my right sock).
cynically yours,
aleX.

by the way: roll on, jake.

I don't carry an auto because of the legal issue. It is illegal here, and I feel that it is not worth the risk.

I disagree that it is unsafe to carry an auto, most modern autos are very safe and reliable if they are truly high quality pieces.

Here in Texas there is a law back from cattle drive days that it is illegal to carry wiresnips...

So, in Texas, DO YOU carry wiresnips?

I do, but don't tell anyone.

I used to carry a Halo III, but gave it up for the Emerson Commander and CQC-7B. They both deploy faster than the Halo ever will.

As far as the Legal Dept. goes, I don't concern myself with silly laws. I'm an Adult and a Free Man, I can make up my own mind what I need to carry to protect myself without any help from the Government at all.

i don't carry an auto; it is illegal in kansas. that having been said, i don't really feel the need for an auto. i can open most of my one- hand folders fast enough. i don't want to over-complicate one of the most practical and simple tools anyway.

I do not own or carry any autos because of the legal realities where I live.

I do not need need to because of practical realities. (i.e. I can open non-autos fast enough if need be.)

That said, laws prohibiting and restricting knife opening and locking mechanisms rank at the top of my "I hate these dumb laws" list.

Over the last year I've carried several different autos

Benchmade AFO
Benchmade Mini Reflex
Microtech SOCOM Elite
Microtech UDT
Protech Runt
Protech TR-3
2 Dalton Cupids (2nd gen. and 4th Gen.)

It's technically illegal here in Alaska, but under the letter of the law so are 90% of the folders out there (law says any knife that can be opened by a spring, gravity, or centrifical force) SO, under that definition I could find several illegal knives on the shelves of the local Wal-Mart. Heck, I've been flippin' Buck 110's open with one hand since I was a young 'un!
It actually seems to be a rarely enforced law here for the most part. I've used my Microtechs and Benchmades in front of LEO's several times and never heard a word about it. The only reason I'm not currently carrying one now is that I came across an offer an a Sebenza I couldn't refuse and can't quit carrying the darn thing! every day my hand hovers between that one and a Dalton, but the Sebenza wins every time! God forbid I should ever lose my Sebenza I'd have no hesitation at all about carrying my autos again. Against the law yes, but it seems to be one of those laws that's about as strictly enforced as the ones that say you can only have missionary sex with your wife or whatever....(unless you go out and intentionally cause mischief with your knife)

Y'all have a good 'un!

Carry an auto??? Hell, I drive mine.
