Do You Carry Your IRREPLACEABLE Knives?

Do you guys EDC your irreplaceable knives? By irreplaceable I don't mean your sentimental attachment to certain knives ( I don't care about your feelings). I mean the knives that are so rare that you just can't go and buy another one.

All the time.

In fact I would dare say that most of the knives I carry are not easily replaceable; either one-of-a-kind customs, or semi-production models that have been tweaked in some way to distinguish them from the standard offerings.

I take pride in using these knives, and smile every time I do.

Life is too short to keep my favorite knives from doing what they where intended to do,

...especially special knives that where designed or modded to meet my particular sensibilities.

If you owned a Rolex, would you wear it or keep it in the safe? If Colt went belly up, would you stop shooting your 10mm Delta Elite? You can't have your cake and eat it too.

Yes I carry every knife in my collection. I regularly carry a TNT signed, on the blade, by Tom Mayo. I carry a CPM-M4 BM Activator #33 of 34. And I also carry and put to hard use a Koster EDC Prototype. All of which would be practicly impossible to replace however I get great joy out of having them on my side and using them. Even aside from their monetary value, they each have their own stories behind them that I revisit everytime I see them.

I really don't like having safe queens. I've got a few that are stashed away only because they are duplicates of some of my favorite knives but everything else sees pocket time whenever I wake up and see fit.

I dont, I know I should, but I don't, just too scared. I pack them all in my BOB, so if it comes to it, I will use it, but not for EDC

Don't get me wrong, I will use expensive knives, but not irreplaceable ones

I have started EDCing my custom from Keith Coleman an since he has retired from the knife making industry I guess you could say that mine is irreplaceable.

I got tired of just looking at my knife in the drawer so now I use it. Light duty use but I at least enjoy using it now.

sure do. for me, its like a bonding experience. if i dont use a knife after i buy it, be it a 30 dollar one or 500, i just dont get too attached. unless its a real gem, the knife ive used plenty is worth more then the one i havent, regardless of what i paid.

The Rolex goes out about five days a week. I have no knives that don't or haven't seen use. And the only 10mm I have is the Glock 20. lol.

My custom knives are made to fit my needs, so I use them. Yes, they are unique, but my taste is constantly changing, so if I accidentaly lost or damage them (a tall story), I could always let make new one, which could be even better ;).

My custom Giants JYDII is one-of-a-kind, but I still carry it. You won't see me using it to cut open bags of mulch or skin a deer though. It is technically replaceable since Tim Galyean is still alive, but I couldn't imagine losing it. I consider it a work of art as much as it is a tool, so I try to keep it looking new.

I also have a couple of Kershaw Mafia Shallots that I reluctantly carry. 50% desire to carry a great knife with sentimental value / 50% desire to keep them in unused mint condition in a cool dry safe.

I carry all my custom and high end knives. I dont buy anything Im not going

to use and carry. Why spend $ if a knife is going to sit in a drawer or safe.

Since I have several commonly available knives (SAKs, multi-tools, and CRK folders and fixed blades) that are equal to or more effective at EDC tasks as my "irreplaceable knives ", I carry those. Stuff I own but don't carry fall into these catagories:
  • Cool knives that I enjoy handling and owning as examples of history, superior artistry/workmanship, clever design, etc.
  • Knives with sentimental value
  • Knives I believe will appreciate, and I intend to sell
I don't have any desire to degrade the condition of any of these knives by carrying them. Incidentally, I also own examples of amazing mechanical engineering in the way of vintage film cameras -- they are great to use for show 'n' tell. Given that I have digital cameras that produce superior images, I have no desire to produce pictures with these way cool film cameras . . .

i carry an emerson custom CQC13 all the time, it would be difficult (and expensive) to replace.

if i'm not packing the '13 i edc a spyderco Ti ATR PE, it too would be difficult (and expensive) to replace.

other than an occasional emerson production CQC12 or BM AFCK the '13 and ATR have been my edc knives for 5 yrs or so.

i carried an old BM 800S AFCK some last week, i had forgotten what a good one it was.
