Most of the time I close them slowly but sometimes I have to let if fall shut hard due to having my hands full or working on something.

When first I read through this thread, I honestly had no idea how I did it. For the past week or so, I've been paying attention. On knives with half stops, I generally close to the half stop one-handed on my leg or something else, but then ease it the rest of the way closed.

I'm not so concerned with blade rap, but I find that paying attention to the feel of the close can be a good indicator whether a given knife needs cleaning, oil, or more time in the rotation.

I’d say I let it drop hard more times than not. But when I first got into slipjoints 13 years ago I never let the blade slam shut but for the last 3 years or so. I find it’s interesting and satisfying to hear and feel the different walk n talk between patterns and makers. Only experienced two blade wraps. Ironically from the same maker too, Never seen a pin crack cause of dropping the blade.

I learnt a few things from the wife of the original knife maker at

Coutellerie Nicolas, Brive-la-Gaillarde, France

When I bought my first knife from her there (I now have 3).

I asked for a slip she said "its a pocket knife put it in your pocket" (though she did give me one anyway) I mostly carry it as she said.

She also said dont get it wet and close it with 2 hands it will last longer, she was horrified when I snapped it close.

I think she is correct,we might like snapping them closed but only do that if you have to and dont have both hands free.

It is under new owners now as they retired this is how the shop looked,I would like to return one day.

I let it close under its own power.

I pinch the pivot with my left thumb and index. The blade spine against my palm.

My right hand goes over the thumb over thumb index over index the handle against my right palm.

Then I bring my palms together closing the knife. Absolutely no way to possibly cut yourself.

I typically use 2 hands to open my folders, so, being attracted to symmetry, I tend to close them using 2 hands also.
(Almost always true when using a knife indoors, but will occasionally close a knife outdoors single-handed and out of control against my thigh.)
