Do you compete?

Alchohol consumtion. It gives me a warm fuzzy feeling when I can outdrink the fullsize people and still not wet myself. Or is that where the warm fuzzy feeling comes from.
Aside from self-distructive activities, I compete with my friends as to who can live a functional life while desperatly clinging to the recklessness of youth.
That looks alot sadder when put down in writing.

I compete in golf. I love to golf, and golf whenever/wherever I can. I enjoy golf because it can be both a team sport (e.g. a scramble or calcutta) and an individual sport (trying to better my score and improve my handicap).

It's a great sport in that as I age, my game improves. I swing a pretty decent club now, but I feel that my best golf is still ahead of me.

It's decent excercise, although not necessarily a great cardio workout. I chose to walk the course when I can, but sometimes will use carts depending on my golf partner or situation.

I did the regular school sports and little league in elementary school. In junior high and high school, I was at a karate tournament almost every weekend. I also wrestled a little in school and AAU.

During college I learned I had bit of potential for weight lifting. I started competing in power lifting and bench press meets while I was in grad school and shortly afterward. I was USPF Northern California Bench Press Champion (SHWT) in 1988 and 2nd in the ADFPA Northern Calif bench press that year (also SHWT). Then I was ranked in the top 16 or 32 in the country by ADPFA in bench press for a year or two after that.

Then was in grad school again and joined the university's powerlifting club team. Unfortunately my "career" was ended there by a broken wrist. Not long after that, I hurt my back so badly I was bedridden for the better part of eight years. That's pretty much when I realized lifting weights in competition isn't really all that smart and since there is no money in it for drug free athletes, it's pretty much nonsensical.

Currently I compete in the following action shooting sports. I also suck at the following action shooting sports, but I have more fun doing it than I did at any of my previous activities:

USPSA pistol
USPSA 3-Gun & multi-gun
other 3-gun and multi-gun
NRA Action Pistol
Steel Challenge-type steel matches
IDPA

I'm not sure if I can even call it "competing," as I know I have no chance to ever win a big match. I do participate in a lot of competitions though. On a good day I can win my division at a club match or class at a bigger match.

I heard this quote years ago, and it stuck like glue. I have ALWAYS been attracted to competition...

I think all this petty competition is just silly. A real man doesn't need constant competition to prove his self-worth.

Oh, and by the way, I've started a lot better threads than this one.

The latent competitor is inside us all.......! :D

Sometimes competition can get silly, and stupid. I golf alot, and sometimes will happen to golf with an ultra-competitive yayhoo. That's when the game is no fun. I was golfing with a fella who was very competitive, but unfortunately for him he was no good. Long story short, he put one of his drives into the treeline on the right and threw his driver backwards missing me by a foot or so. Mind you, I was in his blindspot and he didn't see me. But still, that type of behaviour on the course is really stupid and potentially dangerous.

Don't get me wrong, I like to compete and I compete to win. But I also like to be a gentleman about my game and demeanor on the course. No bragging, no trash talking, and no one-upmanship from me. I let my game speak for itself. And at the end of the day what's really most important to me is that I had a good time with good friends.

I used to do quite a bit of wrestling as a kid, and did pretty well at it, although I sucked at every other sport I attempted. (football, track, soccer, baseball)

My son and I both currently compete in Judo. Not as much as I would like, but enough to placate the ole ego. I've always taken first place, but...one could very fairly say that I'm kind of a big fish in a small pond up here. (also haven't competed much, between dealing with injuries and forced participation in the adult world)

Would like to try some shooting sports sometime, but can't really decide what direction I'd like to go if I did that. I do think I'd like to attend a blackpower shoot some time soon though.

I love competing once I get into it, but I have a helluva time making myself get started.:o
