Do you dig w/ your knife?

There would have to be something very important or valuble under ground for me to dig with my knives. Also, I have never been in a survial situation where I had to dig for anything, but using a knife for a digging tool would have to be a last resort as would be using a shovel to skin animals......etc. If you damage or break your knife out in the bush, your ease of survial has just diminished by 50% or better and that is a situation I wouldn't want to put myself in.

I use my knife to dig up roots or plants for use as food or herbs.

I wouldn't do it with a thin-bladed knife. You can use rocks, bone, sticks. Rob Simonich and I talked about it once -- he made the point of his Mid-tech Raven combat model reinforced because (in his own words), "I like to dig with my knife."

Any of the thicker blades like a Simonich Mid-tech, Fehrman, Busse, TOPS, and others (like the ones mentioned by Skammer), will do a fine job of digging. You just have to be careful...if it's rocky soil, take that into account. Don't dig like a madman trying to reach China in 15 minutes! :D

If I don't have a strong knife, but only a folder (or no knife at all), then there are ways to make the tools you need for splitting out of rocks, bone, etc.

That's what they make shovels for !! I use a Glock, folds up small and is very light. One friend uses a trappers tool [sorry I don't have a photo] which is a heavy duty multipurpose tool.
