I notice that even though that my knife taste are changing, I always seem to have at least one Buck knife with me. Maybe it's because I started off with a Buck 20 years ago when I joined the service (Buck 110). Maybe it is because of the Custom Shoppe and the excellent details on my 532's. Whatever it is, I am glad I have my Buck knives. It is funny, even though I am only collecting customs, I didn't sell my Buck collection.

Anyone else reach for their Buck everyday, too?

Even though I have also been gravitating towards only customs (handmades anyway), I'll be looking for more Bucks also. Partly because I missed the first series of 532's as well as the Master versions

, but also due to the pleasure I experienced after getting my 110 though Pete's. I have various production models I use as often as I can, like my cherished Mentor. I know I've said it before, but this knife is (to me) a perfect candidate for the Custom Shoppe. Premium steel upgrade and plethora of handle choices would make this the rival of ANY handmade knife out there! (IMNSHO) Great camp knife with all the attributes of a fighter ( heaven forbid!)

. Anyway, yes, I'll always have a Buck in my carry rotation.

Greg,

I just wouldn't be the same person if I didn't reach for my Bucks every morning. I'd be lost without them. I like the feel of them in my hand and also in my pocket. I wear a Bucktool on my belt that I use at least 10 times a day(I install carpet for a living and it sure does come in handy). Even if I didn't collect Bucks I would use them every day.

Brian,

I have to admire your taste in knives. The Mentor is a great knife. You're right it should be in the lineup at the Custom Shoppe. Buck awarded all the club members who displayed at the NKCA Cincinnati show this past October with a stag handled Mentor. Chuck Buck was on hand to sign the knives. I wouldn't trade mine for anything. That stag handle sure does feel good in hand.

A signed, stag handled Mentor !? (insert drool and lusting here) John that sounds very nice indeed, I guess that's a pretty good incentive to get a showable collection together! Are the scales pinned slabs or solid piece of stag?

Brian,

They are pinned slabs that match perfectly. My two boys and one daughter also displayed at that show and they each received a Mentor.
Their's are perfectly matched as well. The Buck employee who made these also does all of the Buck service award knives. His name is Wilde Bill Cody. He does an excellant job.
For the NKCA Chattanooga show this past month Wilde Bill made some stag handled Big Skies. Unfortunately, I didn't get to go to the show because I was sick, but I heard they were beautiful. More were made than necessary. The remainders will be sold to Buck Collectors Club members. Look in the upcoming May newsletter for more info. If more orders are received than available knives, I believe we can have more knives made up. Don't quote me, but I think the going price will be $85. Some of the proceeds will benefit the club.

John,
OH No! I was suposed to advertise the extras in the newletter? Murray is gonna kill me! I am afraid they will have to wait until May.
I also had a question for you John. Knowing your collection consists of some of the most beautiful and Bowie sized customs made, just exactly what do you carry on your belt every day? I was thinking maybe a 904 sub hilt bowie in damascus with mastodon ivory scales or sumthin. ;-)

Take care,

Joe,
Don't tell John I said this, but I heard he loves his Buck Knives so much that he will not use them. Instead he carries knives from Pakistan as his using pieces!!!!!!

Just kidding, John!!

Joe,
I think the May newsletter will be just fine for the extra Big Skies. That way the excitement will build.

I sure wish I had two 904 sub-hilt Bowies with Damascus and mastodon, then I would carry one daily for sure! My daily carries are one custom 503 with Siberian Impala scales and one custom 532 with Mastodon scales. I also belt carry a Bucktool. I use the Bucktool more than anything. I don't know how I ever got along before they were introduced!

Larry,
Okay my friend, I owe you one big time! Just the thought of using a Pakistan super special stainless surgical steel knife gives me the willies!

I purchased my first Buck in late 1981, a 501
Squire. After using it for a couple years at
my first job, I put it away when my job was
eliminated. After that, I got into firearms
and the knives were left on the back burner,
forgotten. Maybe ten years ago, I started
thinking about that Buck 501 and where it
could be. I had lost it. (Still had the
factory belt sheath for it, but the knife
was nowhere to be found.)
I missed that knife!
Around July of last year, I was poking around
in my mother's attic and came across my old
fishing tackle box. I opened it up, and lying
in one of the compartments along with a pair
of small scissors was my 501!
I was elated, especially since the knife was
in the same condition as it was when I "lost"
it ten years earlier. No rust at all.
Some of the stuff in the box was pretty
rusty, including the scissors.
But not that Buck knife!

Dave

Dave,

That's the best way to lose a Buck knife. It may have taken ten years, but I am glad you found it. What a great surprise that must have been!

There is nothing that makes my day more than finding something I have lost once...especially a knife!

John,

I agree. That is a good way to lose your
Buck. An even better way is to leave it
on a shelf at work! Fortunately, my boss
found it rather than a customer. We are
talking about the same knife and it was
just a few years earlier when I was using
it in the paint store to open cartons.

I'm keeping a close watch om the 501 now
and was really surprised when I found it.
It will not be lost again!

Dave

You are right, Greg. It's a great feeling to
find something you've lost and thought was
gone forever.
Especially a Buck knife!
