Hey fellas, I don't know if this kind of thread has been posted before, so I apologized if it has.

Do you ever get ridiculed or make fun of for being into survival shows/skills/gear? Do people ever take you for a paranoid loser?
I mention this because the other day I asked my bro-in-law to bring me some fishing line since I needed to restock my fishing kit, which I usually carry in my survival pouch/kit. When he came to visit with the rest of the family for a bbq, he came upstairs to hand me the fishing line and he saw me putting it in the aforementioned kit, catching a glance of the stuff I had there. He didn't ask any questions, just smirked and went downstairs.
When I finally went downstairs myself I was greeted by "hey, here comes survivorman", and "hey, what's up bear grylls?"
They taunted me all night asking me whether I was planning to go into the jungle, etc..
I also get crap from my g/f from time to time when she sees me watching tv and it happens to be "dual survival" or "man woman wild".
Does this ever happen to you? It doesn't bother me that much cause I know I'm doing the sensible thing which is being prepared, and if it ever came to it, I would have a pretty good grasp on what to do, but still, I sort of feel embarrassed by it.
These are my woes. Thoughts?

All the time from family and people at work. But they also come to me when they need something from my first aid kit or to make some sort of expedient repair. I am always asked for duct tape, zip ties, wire and stuff like that. I just alway have to say something about it being nice to be prepared. When they come back a second or third time I have to ask why they don't have stuff on hand.

I occasionally get similar reactions which does not really bother me. I think your preparedness will prevail in the end. It is another chance to maintain mental toughness. Well done.

i probably shouldnt say this but i am going to.. if you carry a survival bag/ kit every day esp in or around places you know dang well you wont need it then yes you probably deserve to get picked on.. i see a lot of things here that baffle me.. dont get me wrong knowing this stuff and practicing it are things we all should do. but if you are going to a market or something like that and you take along a survival can or somehting, well you are a dork. however being into survival shows doesnt make you a dork. you should ask them what they watch. more times than not its more silly than watching somehting you can actually learn from... so pay no mind to that. but if you are one of those folks who carry around 3 knives, have a psk kit just to go to the store or something (esp if you live around people and will not ever be in an actual survival scenerio) then yes that is odd..... this is just my opinion..

survival kits as in a fishing kit or fire kit just to go to the store (just as an example) first aid kits are different. i can see carrying a fire kit if you live in cold climates are far from civi.. but for most of us that is not the case.. hope this makes sense... that being said i have made some fire kits and other things and my cousin as well picks on me.. well jokingly picking.. i just tell him that its good stuff to know in case the poo ever hits the fan or what not.. now i am rambling

Co-workers give me jabs all the time because they know I collect knives. How many knives do you have on you today(I only carry a Syderco Delica at work) or watch out scotty might pull out one of his knives(jokingly of course). They don't know I'm into wilderness survival. The wife and kids don't really understand it, but they let me be as long as I don't break the bank.

i am shocked the kids do not like the outdoors as much or if not more than you... growing up i was never inside. but we didnt have xbox and computers then either (1985-1993)... well in the 90'swe had games and such but most of us still went outside to fish or hunt or to hike.. kids now a days it seems they are staying inside more.... when i do have kids those lil turds are going to stay outside :D

No, but I was hiking up a 14er when I met this smug ultralighter from MA... laughed and told me I didn't need a "HUGE" fixed blade (my 3.5" Dozier).

I usually shut them up with: "Nope. No jungle trips. I just plan on eating the neighbors. Why do you think I have so many sharp knives?"

Follow that up with a big, toothy grin, a quip about "long pig bbq" and they'll never bug you again. In fact, they may never visit again!

People always poke fun at what they don't understand. It's a defense mechanism.

I have had several family members poke fun at me. But I always get the last laugh when they try to go "camping" and it takes two trucks and a camper to hold all their shit. Mine fits in a backpack.

"You ladies are real hardasses. Where'd you put the screened in porch and the porta-jacuzzi?" sez I, as I walk away shaking my head and laughing. Giving somebody shit is a two-way street.

I have cousins who are "hunters". Which basically means "we shoot until it stops moving and tear the woods all to hell when we decide to play Tarzan." They'd last about 15 minutes if they ever got lost. I asked one of them: "What would you do if you were lost in a remote part of the woods and knew you weren't going to be found for at LEAST 7 days?"
Their first answer is usually: "I'm already hunting. What else do I need to do? Dumbass."

I just grin and give them a  along with "Good answer, Nimrod."

No. Only when I go for long day hikes. Just to clarify.

LOL... Well the wife is a city girl. She's starting to get into the outdoor thing. My 17 year old daughter is more into clothes, hair and going out with her friends. My 3 year old son loves going out with me. He gets a kick out of animal spotting and exploring. Whenever he sees one of my knives he says "That's mine when I'm a big boy right dada?" Lets just say he has a nice collection when I'm done.

That had me rolling on the floor dude, funny stuff. Glad to know I'm not the only one being made fun of.

You live in North Carolina and don't think it's a good idea to keep a car kit in case...oh....a hurricane were to strand you away from home? Or maybe another snow/icestorm the likes of last year (or was it year before last?) does the same?

"my coworkers make jabs at me...'' I find this ironic because you're the one with the knives :D Yeah, my rafting buddy wants to know why I need 9 machetes, but he's got 7 whitewater rafts that are all rigged with top of the line 450 dollar Yeti coolers and custom dryboxes. I asked them if he could paddle them all at the same time, and mentioned machetes cost 10 bucks, versus 10,000-he hasn't said much since.

yes under those circumstances i do but every day? every normal day? no i dont. i do keep a first aid kit. :D but a fishing kit? lol no i dont.. but keep in mind i also keep warm clothes in my truck in the winter too. i am prepared but not paranoid prepared. also you are warned when snow storms and hurricanes are coming.

you live in NC?

would it be bad to carry one everyday???

just because you are not in a remote place does not mean you won't need a survival kit... right???

Well, I live in North Jersey, in a pretty well populated area, so unless I go out to the woods, I won't need it. I do carry a folder with me everywhere though. Also worth mentioning, I do have a similar kit in the car at all times, along with other stuff like a shovel, axe, etc. I got stranded for 4 hours last year in a Nor'easter and it was a guy with an axe and a shovel that got me out. I did stay warm, dry and hydrated through the ordeal.

I keep my personal kit on me all the time. Yes, even at the store. Why? Because there is first aid in it. Only a little bigger than an altoids tin, and it rides in my left front cargo pocket. And I don't live dead smack in the middle of the city either.

As far as being made fun of -- not really. Everyone around me always talks about if they ever get lost they want to be with me or my dad though. Go figure.

Teased? No. I really don't discuss more than camping, basic survival skills etc with family. They no I carry my medicine and some bandaids/bandages with me, and think it's a good idea.

However, I do get teased for my passion with knives. My cousin went to Alaska maybe ten years ago or more, and I asked him what knife he took. "A little Swiss army knife." Looked at me like I had three heads, why would I ask such a question.
