That you buy two of them? I know it may be overkill or even some form of illness. Do some Knives just grab you and don't let go? Now you guys with 50 Charlows may want to chime in,lol

My case in point would be as of late the #47 Viper, I have all of them but went ahead and bought two Natural Stag Vipers. Maybe you might buy one to use and one to put away?

Yep, happens to me sometimes. Nice to have a backup and it frees me up to use one a little harder than I otherwise might. Right now only thing I have an exact dupe of is my black Pioneer SAK, one for carry and one in a box for backup. They are cheap enough that it's worth it, especially since its the knife I'll use for hard tasks and when there is possibly a greater risk of loss.

You have all of them??! Would love to see a group shot of that!

Never. I've never had a knife that was so perfect I had to have an exact duplicate. There's always been something I wanted to change -- steel, blade grind, handle material, whatever. This includes customs. That being the case, I've never seen the point in buying doubles.

Of the exact same knife, same scales and steel? I have done that three times, where I bought one knife and then bought another just like it.

Once was an accidental double order - I thought one vendor was out of stock so I placed an order for the same knife from a different vendor, but the first one came through. I ended up keeping both and used one of them to experiment with dyeing the bone handle and keeping the other original.

The other two times were with Case CV steel knives so that I could experiment with patinas on one knife and leave the other untouched. Of those two, I still have two Case Small Texas Jacks, Amber Bone CV. I carry one of them relatively often, the other sits in the box. The one I carry is the one I played with various patinas on. The other was the Chestnut Bone CV Peanut, and I gave the duplicate to someone. I have other Peanuts, but no duplicates.

I certainly have multiple knives in the same pattern with different handles or steels or both, or with variations in blade types. I will get drawn to a particular pattern or style, but other than those specific ones I mentioned, no exact duplicates.

I know some of the more well-heeled collectors will buy two of each knife that they buy, and put the best one into their collection and use the other one. Not a thing wrong with that if you can afford it and want to do it that way.

Just Mora and SAK... And Beckers. They are cheap enough, and I haven't replaced any; I just keep spreading them throughout (and occasionally give one away).

I've always had a thing about ram's horn covers, it's just great material. GEC only made 11 of these Tidioutes in 2011, and I have two of them:
a safe queen and a user.

Yes, if I really like it I will buy a user and put one away. I have done this with several factory knives and a couple customs.

goodness! Dat ram's horn! I wonder why GEC doesn't make any more in ram's horn? It's a gorgeous material

While there are a few I wouldn't mind owning a duplicate of, my collection is to small(depending on who you ask), and there are too many other knives I want to try out.

I bought 5 case stockmans one day when I found them at a hardware store for literally 2 dollars each. I was quite surprised after inspection to find they were real.

I don't know if I'll ever run into that again, it was an eagle hardware right before it turned into Something else

Wow, that's a great deal!

Thanks, daver, here is another one of the same model from 2007 with very different looking exterior bark ram's horn.

Opinels, Sodbusters, and Mercatur k55s,

I like these knives very much and am very likely to give the one out of my pocket to a friend or family member without one.

I have others on my person, but these are the ones that I think start new knife collectors on the right track.

all of the recent ones, I don't have the Ebony and another one I believe. yes ill have to get some pics of them together.

That would be awesome! Love to see a photo. I had an ebony once and sold it... Wish I'd never done that...

And with regard to the OP, I definitely buy doubles sometimes if I like the knife enough. One goes in the vault, the other a user. In fact, I kinda look at buying a double of a stag or elk covered knife the same as buying the same knife with a different cover. I have three elk vipers and I got them because all of the covers look completely different and I liked them all a lot for different reasons. They all have really nice figuring and two of them have extra fat slabs. To me, each knife is different. Same knife, but different covers.

...but then again, I'm also the guy who orders the same sh*t everytime I go to the restaurant...
