Do you ever take along a knife specifically to use at table when attending a BBQ or visiting a steakhouse for a meal?

If I'm eating steak: I couldn't care less what the folks around me think...

Oh? You don't think it would be relatively easy to choose a knife that wouldn't be viewed as "dangerous or threatening" by almost everyone? How about a folding knife which was indistinguishable from an actual steak knife, or perhaps a fruit sampling knife? There's a ton of models out there -- which I had no idea existed prior to this thread.

There does not exist a knife or even an image of a knife that won't offend someone in some areas of the world. Far too many people are fixated on what other people do and too many of that group are endlessly seeking an excuse to be offended or outraged or pretend to be scared.

It's not the knife: it's how it is being handled...
keep your elbows in, and the blade on the meat: no problems!

i dont eat out, prefer to save money to spend on things like steak and knives. use a whiltshere run up on the steel to slice my steaks at home, no dramas no regrets

In this day and age where far to many people can look at ANY knife a freak out, and scream "he's got a machette" when it's a small LaguleI ... the likelihood of someone in the restaurant either raising a stink or calling the law is very high.

And I have seen someone be asked to put their knife away as they are provided with a cutting utensil. So it's not considered ok in many places. And even if the staff may be ok with it, many of the people dining there at the time may not be. And it's not worth the hassle (right or wrong) to do so. If I feel the need to cut steak with my own knife I grill at home.

And for me if a butter knife won't cut the steak they serve me, it's the steak not the knife. I guess the man that was asked to put his knife away should have offered to whip up the matradee a sandwich so all could applaud and rejoice.

Using that sort of logic, why would you use ANY knife, even one that was provided by the steakhouse? How would the origin of the steak knife innoculate it from somehow causing discomfort/problems to other patrons?
That's easy... You tell folks that's it's a "Free-Ranging, organically grown vegan knife...

... That is non-gender specific"!

only if separating bananas in a grocery store though. otherwise it would be uncouth.
