Is it just me or do you ever wonder why everyone doesn't carry a blade or 2 or 3 or 5 etc....?
I will be watching a movie with my wife and some "idiot" will get stuck somewhere or get attacked and be totally helpless(like these Blair Witch morons). I will look at my wife and say...."You know if he was carrying a Military or a Trailmaster(read Battle Mistress now) or if she had an endura..." et al.
Every where I go I wonder who is carrying and who isn't. Although I can usually pick out the carriers, that does not always apply.

I do! I've had that same expieriece..I'll be watching TV or a Movie and I'll see somebody struggling to someone from a burning or sinking vehicle w/ a stuck seat belt. I think to myself "What kind Hero leaves his frigging Knife at home...wus.."! I frankly can't imagine NOT carrying my knife or Knives everywhere I go. What further baffles me is the Cops and Emergency workers I know who don't carry a blade....I would count that as an absolute necessity.

Good point Scarman,
To me what's even more amazing, are the people that are surprised or shocked that your even carrying a knife, let alone 2 or more, and I live in Brooklyn which has a really bad rep. I have carried a knife everyday since I was about 7 or 8, since the time my parents thought I was responsible enough to carry one. I now carry 2, a Swiss Army and a Spyderco Walker Lt/wt, there's an old saying, "It's better to have it and not need it, than to need it and not have it!"

Welcome aboard, Scarman

I remember a few years back, I saw an episode of Resue 911. The story was, a young kid, maybe in kindergarden was sliding down a slide on the playground. The string from the hood on his coat got hung up and was choking him. He was positioned in such a way that nobody could push him up to relieve the wieght. One of the teachers says "somebody get a knife." One of the others runs to the cafateria and a few minutes later returns with a plastic knife like a fast food place might have. It didnt work. They did finally rescue the kid, but if somebody had a real knife it sure would have been easier.

The guy behind me at the supermarket checkout last night was using a key to slice bread off a loaf. I thought about lending him the Ladybug or micra on my keyring or the SAK in my fannypack. Then I took a good look at him and decided not to.

Richard, I saw that same episode of Rescue 911. And I remember thinking the same thing, "Just get a knife and cut the damn cord, for God's sake!" Here are the reasons I carry knives, in descending order of necessity:

1. Daily cutting chores (face it, this is what our knives get used for 99% of the time).

2. Getting somebody else out of a jam (a good example would have been the kid caught on the slide).

3. Getting myself out of a jam (again, let's face it, this isn't a daily occurance

I certainly don't mean to imply that my daily cutting chores are more important than the other uses, they simply come up far more often and that's what I base my decision as to what types of knives to carry on.

I know what you mean my friends all think I $%##%$ nuts for carrying as much steel as I do. Even more when I'm gonna be somewhere where I don't know the land or situation.
Usually it's a folder and a boot and neck knife along with my leatherman wave I NEVER leave home without it. Better than
mastercard. Hey rfrost that's a great quote. wheres' it from?

Scarman - Ditto!

And usually when people find out that *you* carry a knife, many of them automatically consider you and your immediate surrounding area as a 'death trap', or they think you have the 'bodily damage' of another person on your mind. I carry and use at least one knife daily (as I'm sure most/all of you do), and it's just a great TOOL! But rarely do non-carriers think of it that way. THEY are the ones with violence always on their mind!

Some/many of them have had a 'bad experience' with a knife. One of my close friends cringes every time I sharpen or even use a knife, saying what a 'dangerous' thing I am doing, and how I could really hurt myself of someone else. Her mother accidentally sliced the tendons of three fingers when she was younger, and lost the use of them for life. But what does that have to do with me? Nothing. Just their perceptions from 'bad experiences'.

They usually are also the ones to say, "Guns are bad! Knives are bad!" Watch out, knifeknuts: the time is just around the corner when people will begin to say that screwdrivers and razors are also 'bad' - if we let it happen ...

You know a funny thing happened to me a few weeks ago. A friend realized that I usually have a pocket knife on me, and he asked me "What is it with you and knives; why do you always have one?" I was carrying my smallest pocket knife at the time, I don't even know the name of it but believe me, it's puny. I looked at him and told him well, to open packages, or whatever. Can you believe he wondered why a person would want to carry a pocket knife??? I thought that was a dumb question.

What's that old saying: A knifeless man is a lifeless man? Something like that, anyways.

Happy trails...

Anyone who has not read Jeffery Sniders "A Nation of Cowards", should do so.

It says a lot as to peoples fear of weapons/tools.

Scarman untill I joined the BladeFourm I thought I was the only nut out there who carried so many knives at one time. I am a newby by the way. Since I have joined I feel a little more on the normal side. I think that all men should carry a knife or two and even the laddies should carry in their purse.Just think of the help you could be what with cutting boxes and string and tape and the like. I even use mine in the resturant when thier knives are not adequate.I truly do feel half dressed when I am in situatiions were I can't carry. Such as air port court houses and the like.So to all the other formites thank you for the feeling.

It has taken me a few years, but by now I have most of the people I work with (LEO's) to where they always carry a knife, at least on duty.In some cases, I've had to give them one, or sharpen one they had at home, but now they wouldn't be caught without one.You would think that police would be taught to carry a knife in rookie school, but that is not the case. You can't do much for the masses, but friends can be converted (my bride now carries 3 small ones, plus a Micra and a SwissCard, and she has designs on several of my serious knives!).

I always wondered the same thing Scarman. When people around me find out that I carry, I always get mixed reactions. Everyone that I work with knows that I always have a knife and that it is SHARP. So you guessed it, nine people use my knife on a daily basis. I ask them if they have a pocket knife? Yes, but its dull. So I teach them how to sharpen the knives that they own. Most of the time people are really excited to learn such a basic task.
My wife used to think that I was a complete nut for carrying knives. After repetatly seeing how incredibly useful knives are in daily life she now carries a leatherman micra, a CRKT KISS. And she has had her eye on a couple of spydercos. Her sister is coming around also.
People who have never used a knife on a daily basis dont know what they are missing. I try my best to convert everyone around me. I.E. I give knives as gifts, sharpen my friends knives and when I get a new knife, I take it to work and show everyone who will listen. I try to get people to understand that I carry such a usefull tool to use as a tool, not as a weapon. Thats about enough rambling for now.
