Do you ever...

So I've been just hanging around and seeing other knives I really like and want to try. I don't currently have money to buy anything new(I'm pretty broke 95% of the time) and see a few out there that I'd love to get my hands on.

The other issue is that I don't have anything currently to trade for or towards these knives. So my question is, even though you're completely satisfied with the knives you have and don't want to let them go, do you ever just kinda get sick of having the same thing and really want to try something different?

Example:
I love my Large Sebenza and carry it daily but sometimes just really want to try something different instead and consider going for something completely different and knocking it out of the drawer and pocket.

So I consider getting rid of said knives to try the other ones that I want to give a go. Though I know if I got rid of them I'd likely regret it and try to get them back later lol.

Do you ever do this or am I alone?
I wouldn't say I bore easily, I just have changing interests sometimes, and like to try new things because my focus is everywhere.

That's me, basically. My small Sebenza, mnandi, dozen or so slip joints, and a few fixed blades of various sizes have my bases covered.
But that Spyderco Southard captures my interest. I don't have a flipper though. I'd have to sell off a bunch of slip joints. My CR knives are staying. I have no need for the Southard, but the gadget factor is appealing. And I've sold all my tactical folders (actually all my folders with G10 scales), so I've sort of started down a path away from the type of knife the Southard is, but there's that whisper...

I've wanted an Ohta friction folder forever, but I've got a Svord peasant for that friction folder itch, and I've got the gentleman folder base covered. But that whisper again...

It is basically the dead end of consumerism. It will never be enough.

I have knives that I consider "keepers" and those that i do get tired of.
It's hard to explain, but the keepers are knives that are aesthetically pleasing and satisfying to use.
It has nothing to do with cost, you either connect with a knife or don't.
With some knives the connection is fast and with others it takes a little longer.
Also I have regretted selling one or two knives. But most don't get missed at all.

That's me, I have my keepers and at this point, that's pretty much all of them.
But I sometimes just tire of the same thing and consider saying screw it and getting rid of them for others.
It's so strange lol. Because I don't want to get rid of any of them, but there are just different things. And even though these are awesome and still exciting and I connect with them, they just kind of lose the initial wow over time. But then you know if you were to get rid of them you'd want them back. And when you got them back you'd have the wow factor again so why go through the whole process? Yet we do it and want to do it anyways.
It's complicated.

It's not that my bases aren't covered, they've been covered lol. And I'm not trying to cover bases or find the perfect pocket knife. I just like new things.

I should be able to get a little something new later today. I need to just chill and be happy with my keepers and get new things here and there when I can. Doesn't stop me from wanting a little change sometimes though. :D

I just like the idea of changing things up. The same thing all the time is awesome and great because it's nice to just have those ones that you love so much that no matter what you always come back to them and they're the ones you enjoy the most. But sometimes I just want everything in the drawer to be different than what it is so I have the chance to switch it up lol.
Though I've switched it up several times over the past couple of years and have finally got to the point where I'm satisfied with what I have and don't want to see any of them go, I still have this slight itch every once in a while.

That's where cheap thrills come in.
I may grab my first Leek or a Cryo or some fun little gadgety knife to divert me for a minute.

I do that a lot,and unfortunately I am not a safe queen collector, everything gets used...so I end up losing quite a bit of money when I sell or trade. This makes me really consider if it is worth it to try for something new.

^^^ Agreed. None of my knives are new.
And yeah, I really want that new purple Kershaw Leek that's coming out!

I agree , I tend to buy cheap slip joints for a fix. Lots of different patterns and handle materials to keep a knife Knut happy.
Bladechick, I saw a few of your other posts about trading your Seb.
I wouldn't do it, unless it was for something in a similar price range.

You can always go to rivers edge cutlery in Columbus and mess around with their stuff.

What I do is I have a box with some few knives, the users and two or three that I'm in love at the moment, when I get tired I put them apart and bring others to the box so they seem new every 3 months or so.
Keeping budget low and fooling myself a little :D

^^ I go there as often as I can lol. Actually going there today.
The Seb isn't going anywhere.

Haha, funny you should mention them. I was planning on going today as well, just to "browse" as I call it. Although browsing usually equates to buying something these days... ;)

^^^ Lol I browse but yes, I normally end up bringing something home.
If you see a girl dressed in baggy jeans and carrying a Sebenza that'd be me lol.

I also saw a giant cabelas in Columbus last month when I was wondering around some Polaris shopping thing, not sure if its open for business but I'm sure they would at least have bench made and spydercos to look at.

I'll probably swing down on lunch break, I work a couple exits up on 270. (I may have told you this over PM)

One of the benefits of the boss being out on vacation = long lunches. :)

I think the Cabelas is set to open in the first quarter of 2013, it's HUGE!

Ah, the mark of a true enthusiast (pronounced addict). I'm in the same boat myself. It's the thrill of the hunt, having something to look forward to. Just because your needs are fulfilled doesn't mean it goes away. All my needs are met several times over and I'm very fond of my regular carry and outdoor knives- that doesn't stop me from having a short list of soon-to-buys.

Besides, if I never bought any new knives my local pusher would get bored every time he makes me dump my pockets to see what I have on me (we carry the same knife so he'd get doubly bored).

I know some people who have traded knives just as a test drive. You try one out for an agreed on time period, say a month, then trade back and if you were pleased with the knife buy a new one for your own. Of course this has to be done with people you can trust will return your knife after time has expired. I would have no problem trading a $100.00 knife for a $50.00 knife if I new it would be coming back or vice versa.

I find myself in the opposite spiritual crisis: I want to find a selection of knives that fills the roles I see myself needing filled, and then stop for a while. Partly it's because I have a hard time paying more than $100 for a knife, and partly because other things have eclipsed knives in importance.

I think I need to get my priorities straight....
