Do you feel comfortable . . .

I might reccommend lookin at somethin or going and holding something that meets their criteria. But I wont say that I reccomend buyin it if I have never held and used it. Like everyone else says its a useless opinion if you do, and why say things about stuff you have no experience with?

I list knives I've never held all the time, but I never say "I recommend..." out of hand. If someone lists price, dimensions, materials, etc., I just have a quick look at some e-tailers and see what looks close to the criteria. Honestly, I don't put much faith in first hand recommendations myself. I have to decide on the performance, ergos, & value on my own.

If I have read good things I will refer to a thread or review, or simply say what good/bad stuff I've heard. I do let it be known if the the info is first or second hand either way.

Nope, I wouldn't recommend a knife that I don't own myself. I might however suggest someone consider a knife model that I merely handled, but always with a disclaimer.

If I do recommend soemthing I've never personally held usually I would recommend the maker (if the knives are generally of good quality in my experience) rather than a specific model.

Normally though, I don't.

If the issue is ergos, the user's reaction is all that counts as he will be using the tool.

If the issue is quality, why would I not pass on an opinion about the reputation of the maker if I have experience with his products OR if there is a strong consensus here about the maker's rep?

I wouldn't mind recommending a knife that I haven't held or owned, as long as it was from a maker/company that I trust (Benchmade, Spyderco, etc.). I would preface the recommendation with the fact that I've never used one, but it seemed to fit their bill.
