I want to make a platen for a horizontal grinder I just finished and I need a piece of 2 inch wide 3/8" thick D2 steel. Most of the steel suppliers I buy from carry up to 1/4 inch thick steel for knives. I want to make a 10 inch platen and will need it heat treated also. Any suggestions will be appreciated. I already contacted Nathan but he will not be making any 10" platens until this coming summer. Thanks, Larry Lehman

Larry- you can order that in 18" and 36" lengths from flatground dot com... Not cheap for D2 that beefy though. About $62 for an 18" chunk.

That is where I got the PFG D2 for the 3/8 D2 platens.

My HT was a higher than normal austenitizing temp with a quench to cryo, temper, long cryo, temper to secondary hardening hump, final hardness HRC 62. I took this approach to maximize abrasion resistance and prevent warping in the future.

You shouldn't use the low temperature tempering temp on a D2 platen like you would a knife because poor long term dimensional stability causes warping on a platen that gets hot on one side, and the precipitated carbides give better wear resistance in this application.

Nathan, I am a stock reduction guy and so I have only a rudimentary knowledge of heat treating and send all my blades out. Since what I want if done properly is a little tricky I am going to use a stock KMG platen temporarily until I might persuade you to make a professional quality 10" platen for me. I will wait because I like good tools and I need every advantage in tool quality to help me make better knives. I already use one of your D2 platens and chiller on my KMG and they work great. Thanks, Larry Lehman
