Do you guys really use your CR knives?

One of the reasons I could afford a small regular Sebenza is all those overpriced $4 Starbucks that I didn't buy. :)

I use a Mnandi daily, a small sebbie on weekends, and carry a large sebbie in the field. I have 2 Umfaans, and 3 other Mnandis that never see use.

I use/carry my Mnandi daily. You can look at it as overkill, but by similar token, so is any watch over $20 and any pen over $2. I carry my Mnandi because it is light, easy to use, a great cutter, and strong. I like to carry my Mnandi because of the attention to detail in both its manufacture and design that make it more than the sum of its parts.

Large Sebbie and a Shadow III here. Both rotate about 50/50 with each other as EDC knives depending on my outfit and environment. Both get used hard. The S3 gets used real hard. :D

Brian, don't be so hard on yourself. The thing that I really like about the Sebenzas is that they are so renewable. Short of intensional abuse (like putting the blade in a vise and trying to break it), you can use your Sebenza very hard and get it all mucked up. Then you just take it apart, clean it, maybe sharpen it (think edge pro) and touch up the scales with Scotchbrite. Ta da! New knife again! But anyway to each his own and if the Sebenza isn't working for you, you might be better off selling it. Personally I think they get better with age and use, kind of like a fine wine, I use my Sebenzas except I'm more careful with the inlayed ones (though I find they can take the daily use without the "charachter marks" associated with the plain models). My inlayed damascus Sebenzas do remain in the vault.

I tried the slipjoint thing but I can't handle a knife that doesn't lock. For me the Mnandi fitts that bill and does so quite nicely. I fact I took out all my tomato plants a couple weeks ago and used my Mnandi to cut the plants into sizes that would fit into my trashcan. That Mnandi it quite a nice knife that has far exceeded my expectations.

Anyway, take care, do what you need to do and no apologies are necessary in the CRK forum. ;)

Scott, from a practical, as well as an artistic standpoint (which the wood inlay, damascus Sebenza is -- a piece of art), I find that mine is holding up perfectly under moderate, daily use. I don't know how they treat that Cocobolo, and how they sharpen that edge, but daily soft cloth polishing and weekly greasing of the blade keeps it brand new looking and cutting, every day. This seems like a knife that can very easily be kept AS NEW, even with use.

To me it's like an old muscle car. Too few miles is much worse for it than too many miles. It takes a balance.

yep, it sounds like price is not a problem for you since you carry a higher price one so it must be preference and comfort and fit. Get what you like and use it. I do use the sebenza for pretty much everything. Keep my small for tasks that are more mundane and carry my large for bigger jobs when camping, etc. Don't feel a bit bad carrying a $300 knife out in the boonies. Have a $600 william henry I carry in the pocket as well for light cutting chores too. Just preference in and what we like. Good that everyone doesn't just like crks or the other knife makers wouldn't have a market. :D

It is a crying shame to leave the knife in a drawer i used mine everyday, i have a small plain regular and small box elder inlay. Up untill i suffered a stroke in january i used my sebbies everyday, now i carry one in my pants pocket so it does not feel to lonely.O h i am not a new signup i have been around for several years and used fwh3

It's simple, Buy the best tool you can afford and enjoy it. you can't take it with you so you might as well enjoy it. It's not like most knives increase in value. At best you would sell it for what you paid for it. Reeves have an advantage in the used market. I see used sebbies go for a good chunk of change so you could always use it then sell it and thing of the money lost as a rental fee. lol. Or get it refurbished.

Also would you buy a table saw and not use it so you don't get it all covered in saw dust? Use your knives.

guy,
I'll give you an example. If you wanted to know why a fully automatic weapon was really necessary, who would you ask? Probably someone who had an actual need to use one. That doesn't mean that there are not a BUNCH of people out there who would buy one and use it to shoot tin cans. The point being is that the latter doesn't really "NEED" such firepower. They just think it's neat.

To each his own I guess.

Thanks for listening,

Brian

Yep I bought mine because it was/is "NEAT" I use it occasionally and it always brings a smile to my face and anyone else who shoots it. As far as my CRK's I have aquired quite a few "personal" CRK's but actually carry a small regular that is USED HARD almost daily in the field opening seed and fertilizer bags, cutting all types of ropes and straps etc. She has held up great through 4 years of abuse/use. Heck it even road the rapids during a white water trip- although I really was wishing I'd brought a cheaper priced knife a couple moments here and there... I Also use regulary a small Calvary in full dress. I have started to carry a large too pretty often. I have others but seldom use them for these cover my bases well though I WILL get around to using my shadow four and GB 5.5 when I set up a decent belt for outdoor play. I find the true "beauty" in CRK knives is when I actually use them. It has been stated before that yes the lesser quality stuff will work and yes we pay dearly in dollars for those last percentage points of quality and service but some of us can justify it especially if we use them... I'd rather have my sebbie than 75 beers or starbucks...
