...to someone the way they handed it to you? My Dad told me this one. He said if you don't, the next time you open it up to use it, it'll hurt you!
Anybody have any other knife-isms ?

Nope, no such thing as luck. Won't get onto my Christian soap box, but suffice it to say I don't believe in it, whatsoever.

However, I DO try not to hand them back the POINTY end :D.

I don't believe in any silly superstitions, but I do believe in being safe. You should never hand someone an open knife (open folder or unsheathed fixed blade), for the same reason you should never hand someone a loaded gun with the safety off.

Saving the half a second it takes to open a folder or flick the safety of a gun off isn't worth hurting someone no matter what the circumstances are.

No superstitions for me either. I've had knife shop workers hand me open folders, but I always hand them back closed or place them on the counter for them to pick it up any way they feel safest doing so.

The old boy scout method works for me. And I make a conscious effort to follow this antime I am looking at or showing knives. Hand it over so they grab the handle and say thank you. It also seems to work the best when both people are aware of the boy scout method. Had a guy at a knife show try to hand me a microtech halo knock off opening end first. I knocked it out of his hand and jumped in his ass about his knife handling skills. What a jerk-off.

If I'm handing someone an unsheathed or open knife, I generally hand it handle-first; although I guess that's not what's really being discussed here.

I hand a knife, if the blade is out, handle first. If they gave it to me blade first, it goes back the same way

I don't see what your dad said as a superstition, but as a tradition, about paying attention to how the knife is being handled. That said, it really should be handed over closed, whether or not that's how they hand it to you.

I never hand a knife back. I figure that if someone really loved their knife, they wouldn't give it to me, so I just keep it.

I always hand a knife (say steak knife) with the handle facing the receiver. My finger is on the handle itself, and the blade edge is opposite of my palm. For my folders, i usually perform the task needed.

That's why I carry a knife. So I don't have to borrow one and give it back.

Oh come on people it's not a superstition. It was just a saying to get a kid to respect another person's property.

My grandpa told me something like that. He wasnt a superstitious person. He told me if a person hands you a knife closed, hand it back closed. If they hand it to you open, return it to them open. I think its has to do more with respect than anything. Or it could be that he didnt want me to close it on my finger...but I still do it today just like he taught me.

The superstition I learned in eastern KY was that you should never close a knife that someone else had opened. I don't think that meets Esav's criteria for being a tradition of respect. I think it was just an old country folk superstition.

I know superstitions are ridiculous but it's amazing how stuff that is ingrained in you at an early age sticks with you. I still would rather not close a knife that someone else has opened, so on the rare occasion that I'm loaning someone a locking folder I will try to open it for them. Usually if they don't have a knife of their own they don't know how to disengage the lock and they hand it back to me locked open.

Of course, that probably means I'll accidentally be stabbed with my own folder one day. Damned superstitions!

How is this different than what transpired at the gunshop yesterday? Went to buy some new spare mags for my carry piece. Guy behind counter asks if I have weapon on me. I say "of course!" He looks me over and says "I don't see it." I untuck shirt from right hip, pull out 1911, hand it to him butt end first, barrel pointing off in some safe direction (floor).

When I handle knives, I ALWAYS hand them back folded. Never been a problem yet.

Fixed blade? Whats that?:D
