Do you hand a knife back...

In the UK you need to give a person a silver (coloured) coin if they give you a knife as a gift. If you don't it will "cut" the friendship.

Thats one I hear alot from folks like game keepers, farmers, foresters etc.

I always hand the person back the knife in the closed position. I often find that people sometimes don't know how to close a knife of my own so they hand it back to me handle first while holding the blade.

When I worked at the knife counter at a store for about 2 years It just got habit to hand a knife to someone closed and it was also kind of store policy so it carries on to this day. Just good safety, that was just about the only rule in the store that made sense.

How is this different than what transpired at the gunshop yesterday? Went to buy some new spare mags for my carry piece. Guy behind counter asks if I have weapon on me. I say "of course!" He looks me over and says "I don't see it." I untuck shirt from right hip, pull out 1911, hand it to him butt end first, barrel pointing off in some safe direction (floor).

When I handle knives, I ALWAYS hand them back folded. Never been a problem yet.

Fixed blade? Whats that?:D

I NEVER hand anyone my carry gun loaded... I carry a Kimber SIS, so should I ever show it to someone, I always remove the magazine and the round in the chamber, then hand it to them slide locked open. Then I tell them not to slam the slide closed, just ease it!

I'm not criticizing you, I just don't trust the guy I'm handing it too! Especially at the gun shop!

For my knives, I try to hand it to people closed, in the rare occasion I actually hand it to someone. But, so many times I'm asked "How do you close this?", that it's usually handed back open..

No problem, I just try to grab it handle first.

I never hand anyone a loaded gun either. EVER. I remove the magazine, and eject the round, and show the person the empty chamber, and lock the slide open, then I will hand them the gun.

I also hand someone back their knife safely too.

I hand over folders closed and fixed blades sheathed. Scissors are another story I run with them pointed end up. You never know when you need to put an eye out.

Same here.

I was surprised but I've given a knife to multiple guys that had no experience with a liner lock, didn't know what to do and thus handed it back open. Not a problem.

And firearms should be handed over either holstered or unloaded/action open, unless you are a range and it remains pointed downrange...but even then its usually easier and better to set it down and have them pick it up.
