The last few days I have been thinking about the Take Apart display I plan to have for next year's Blade Show and the bigger thought came..What are my Buck collecting goals? For years it was simple..find and buy only the rarest, oddest and coolest 112's my budget and KathyJo would allow. But here and there I found myself wanting and buying a few other models for gifts and that led to buy a few non 112's. And I like it! I even bought a Camillus Large Trapper but I tried for the Buck version.
So what are your Buck collecting goals? Armand worked on finding the 2 line point up versions of all the 100 series Craig is working on getting every Buck ever made JB goes for 110's with clips..farm is after high end folders (and getting them lol) and I of course chase 112's. David my Brother absolutely is a 110 BUCK NUT but for some of ya'll it ain't too clear..

Laughs ( getting them not always )
Cool looking 110 and 112 thanks for the inspiration

No goal, yet. I found my way here on a G00gle search and ended up meeting some great new friends. In these past 9 months of Buck collecting I have amassed about 3 or 4 dozen knives. From the 300-series up through various 110 and 112's, 100-series fixed blades, Vantages, a couple of BOTM keepers and an LE.

Basically I purchase what interests me, what I will likely carry and is within my budget. In the coming years I hope to acquire a few more of the rarities. Right now though, my sights are mostly on the 110 and 112's although I have a GCK on the way.

You fellas are an amazing group but jeepers, what a bunch of enablers! :D

This could be a really good thread. It might even get into the dangerous area of "Are you a collector or an accumulator?". It's getting late in the evening for me, but I'll be back with my thoughts after I sleep on things.

I dunno ... get a user of one of the Camillus made Buck stockman that makes the 301 a "medium" size, and the 303 a "small"?
(What was that model? The 307?)
Find a circa 1968/1969 Buck 110 in decent condition (tip never snapped, blade not over sharpened to a "toothpick", and no one ever introduced it to a engraver) like I had back then?
Get a 103? :.. nah... that would be a waste of a 103 ... my hunting days are over .... :(
Get a genuine Buck 110 Brown leather sheath?
Eh ... never mind ... I'll never be able to afford any of these ...

I suppose I'll just use and enjoy the Buck knives I have for the next 65 years.
(If "65 is the new middle age" then I have 65 left to go...)
(I ain't gonna hold my breath on that, nor even bet so much as a penny, that I have another 65 years to go.... if I do, then no doubt I'd be the last surviving member of The Class of '74 (the 100th graduating class) at my old High School ... also on the plus side, it would unquestionably tick my ex and kids off royally, if I lasted that much longer. :) )

I have been thinking more and more about that lately, as things shift more and more “Buck” in my collection. There are a few non Buck knives that I carry, as well as Buck, but not many. And I only “collect” the Buck knives that I “would” use in any given situation. So I suppose that was where my focus has been.

But lately I’ve started feeling like having a “goal” would make it more fun. I’ll have to think more on it. Great thread idea

Here are some of my thoughts about goals in collecting. I might use the term focus instead of goal, since goal suggests you will reach a finish point. For me that doesn’t seem to happen. Sometimes I buy a knife just because I like the looks of it, but I don’t think that’s really collecting. Like many Buck collectors, I started off with 110s and soon concentrated on the early versions—I’m still missing a couple of variations for the 1st and 2nd Versions—because I think the story of design changes from the 1st Version through the Two Dots is fascinating. About the same time, I did get all of the 100 Series Two Line versions. My other focus has been on the 300 Series—especially the 303 and 317. A lot of people might look at the 303 and think it’s been the same since the first knife made by Schrade, but close examination shows a lot of subtle changes in design. There are a lot of interesting things to find in the ordinary production knives.

I’m not quite as enthusiastic about getting knives just because they have different handle materials, but that doesn’t mean I don’t have my fair share of those, especially 102s and 303s. Getting custom knives seems to be a never-ending path—there are a lot of people doing that sort of work—and deciding how to limit which knives to buy is difficult. I understand people collecting customized work by a particular person—David Yellowhorse for example—but that doesn’t seem to be for me.

Right now I am focusing on fixed blade knives with a blade length of four inches or less. There are a lot more of those than I thought, so that will keep me busy for a while.

I don’t have a goal necessarily, mainly my interest was acquiring the different models and versions to suit my needs. I started off with the basic 301 and 110. Then a 192 and 110 AG series. After that I found some other interesting models and my needs were changing so I also got some vantage pros and a brass and rosewood 303 and 301 and a 124 frontier. Of course then came the 2018 Buck 301 forum knife and I had to have two of them lol. Then a 117,119 and 120 brass and cocobolo set. Along the way I’ve found some other models that peaked my interest and had to give them a try. I figured I might be missing something if I skipped over them. Anyway I have a sizable accumulation of 10 various 110s including an automatic and a couple 112s in upgrade steel along with some modern flippers . I think I acquired more than I first imagined but I have enjoyed the process and I have my needs covered for now. I don’t plan on collecting but that could change.

My problem is the Bucks I think just look cool ..and I want to play with them. First time was the 651 Pig Sticker a long time ago. Lately it's the Talon. I'm not going in the woods to clear any brush or trim trees any time soon and I wood feel a little silly walking around the house with one on my belt, even with one of Mike's great shieths . For years I thought of cool Bucks like that in the number of 112's I would have to pass on in order to get it. But how many 112's does a man need? I'm not quite sure yet. They keep making odd ones...

I really feel guilty if I buy any other brand..It's weird I know but I have been buying Bucks exclusively since I first went to the Blade Show in 2007. It happened this week for the first time when I wanted to try out a large trapper. I really tried to find a actually Buck labeled version but ended up with a factory made parts knife with just the bullet and no blade etch. Buck has at one time or another made every cutting tool a person might need with the exception of medical tools..And I suggested to Chuck in Atlanta that they consider that market after my bypass surgery..I knew it would be sharp! I have to admit the fact that Buck is a Christian company influenced me and still does.
