As I get more and more knives, I start to realize that I am grouping them into catagories. As soon as I get a new knife, I start to place it in a catagories and I will only use it when I am doing a specific thing.

Let me explain. I have knives for work, hanging around the house, self defense (sort of), woods type activities, and water activities.

Here are some of the knives I use for each task.

Work:
Benchmade 921 Switchback CE, Centofante 4,

Hanging around the house:
Calypso 3, Centofante 4, Delica 3.

Self defense:
Al Mar Shrike, Seki-Cut Encounter, Centofante II.

Woods activities (hiking, camping, ect):
Manix, CF Military, Para.

Water Activities:
Blue 93mm Rescue CE. Love this knife for this role.

Most of these knives see double or triple duty but some are used only for a certain task. The Rescue and Manix are good examples. They could be used for more tasks but they seem best suited for the tasks I gave them and I have other knives that work better in other roles.

What are your catagories and what knife best fills the role? There are certain knives that can do almost everything well. The Para and the Calypso 3 can fill many roles at the same time. In fact most of the knives could but I like to pick the best ones for the job.

I kinda group mine also.
I have my work knives: 806D2, SE Endura- good for when someone borrows a knife or I have to cut up some cardboard.
Defense knives: CQC-8waved, Kris in my front pockets.
Home/PJ knife: mini-AFCK with a Spydie hole, 50/50 blade.
Woods/in the car: Some type of fixed blade. My car- CRKT First Strike, wifes car- Kumo(for the moment).

And to think I use to just carry an Endura(SE) and Delica(30/70blade). It's a wonder I was able to cut anything at all. :)

I stopped collecting Spyderco's a little while ago. But, I'm doing my best to make up for that now.

Around Town: Bob Lum Chinese Folder, Peter Herbst Autum Folder, Endura

Defense: Persian Black Micarta (large version), Endura, Para Military (to be delivered)

Camping/Hunting: Endura, Para Military

good question mr Griggs. Mine would be:

1) Ocean - paddling, boating, fishing, free-diving - Pacific Salt (yellow)

2) Dress-up, coporate etc - Caly3

3) Bush - walking, mountain biking - S30V Military

4) House/Yard work - D'Allara or Native 3D

For work it's my black Tasman/SE for the rest of the time it's a toss up between:

G10 Military/SE
SS Police/SE
Delica 3 or 4/SE
Endura 4/SE

I'm a stay at home Dad, so generally I carry a FRN SE Endura (either the E1or E4 versions) almost all of the time. It's the best all around utility knife I've found yet. If I get an afternoon off:p which is very very rare, you'll usually find me carrying one of my Elishewitz or Anso customs.
Cheers,
Rob

I carry my D4W almost all the time, now, because it's so easy to carry and open, and because when I'm on campus my blades have to be <3". When I work out (also on campus) I carry my Byrd Meadowlark because my delica doesn't really work with those pockets. Sometimes when I'm out and about town I carry my Endura4 — when I get my E4W it will deffinately be my out and about knife (until Albuquerque bans emerson waves, that is). When I'm dressed up I carry my Calypso jr VG-10.

Centofante III--Sunday go to meetin knife
E III pe & E IV se--work
Native pe--hangin around the house

Sort of:) I have my "basics" that tend not to change for anything. Usually, it's a D4/BM Mini-Grip/small SAK/Dragonfly. Depending on what I'm doing, I usually just add to that.

Yardwork - Gerber Gator/CE Endura 3/other beater types.
Reno work - CE Endura 3/Bryd Meadowlark & Crow

If I'm playing with something new, I'll simply add it.

I group mine too, but there is always a Spydie on me somewhere. I take my Delica 4 with me everywhere. If I'm in jeans and a tshirt its clipped to my pocket. If I'm at school or a "nicer" function it is clipped IWB at 4oclock to keep it out of sight. If I am at work in a shirt and tie is hangs around my neck is a kydex neck sheath.

I don't carry it for self defense at all, rather a tool. I usually have a small slipjoint with me at work or school as well, as the sheeple aren't easily offended by it. It's just a 3" wood and brass handle Buck knife.

I have spent more money on knives then I care to calculate, but the Delica 4 just seems to win out every time. I haven't dropped the coin on a Caly 3 or Stretch yet, but I see it as the only designs that I would like more than my Delica. I'm a very function oriented person.

Kevin I tried to start a similar thread on the Spyderco.com Forum here a week or so ago and didn't hardly get any hits at all  I think you definitely worded it better and got your point across more succintly.

For Work My Spyder models are: Big C-44 Dyad ( best blade ever), G-10 Harpy, Calypso Jr. ZDP-189, Spyderench, Victorinox Swiss tool

Self defense> C-60 Massad Ayoob, Matriarch, C-111 Captain, C-46 Bob Lum tanto folder

dress up occasions: C-39 Micarta Dyad Jr. , Trailing point LIL Temperance, Bram Frank Gunting, and the fully serrated Massad Ayoob

Hunting & Fishing & outdoors: Fixed Blade Temperance models, Cold Steel Master hunter PLUS, Spyderco Catcherman, TASMAN PE, Big C-44 Dyad  LIFE IS GOOD in Spyderville ;)

Most of the time I carry different groups at the same time.

EDC: Delica 4, no knife can beat that one:) together with a Military for the bigger tasks. (since yesterday a SE Para Military)

Dress Knife: Scorpius with Pallisander overlay, or if my dad allows it his Volpe.

Self Defense: Military and Para Military SE.

I am in the process of buying the necessary knives for a crosscountry bike trip.
Now for bicycle touring and camping I carry a custom survival knife designed and made by Paula Largin; its length 9 1/2", blade length 4 1/2", handle length 4 1/2", blade thickness 3/16", handle material Oosik, and 1/2" of steel juts from end, with lanyard hole, to hammer with. It weighs half a pound. It replaced my hatchet, provides instrument for light to moderate hammering, and may be used to dig if necessary. It has given me a decade of yeoman service. Then next is a Spyderco Delica 4 for the more delicate work; then a CoPilot, ATS-55 stainless, stainless handle, for backup while camping and for small jobs like rope and string cutting. I also carry the Leatherman Wave, with its two blades, and leatherman Squirt with one. The Squirt hangs around my neck.

Around town I carry the Delica 4, CoPilot, and Squirt; sometimes, like when going to set up a network for someone, I carry the Wave. Usually just the Delica, CoPilot, and Squirt.

For dress occasions I carry the Squirt under my shirt and the CoPilot inside breast pocket.
I depend on the Delica and CoPilot so much because I haven't bought the requisite knives yet for a civilized existence. I got rid of some other knives which were not safe to use.
Most of my future purchases will be Spyderco, except one more custom from Paula Largin if she will do it.

I have my Salt on my PFD for work and play. For EDC, I carry my small Seb and for work, I've replaced my D'Allara Rescue with a SnG. Off topic, but I really wish Spyderco would make a hard-use rescue knife. Mate a Para or Manix handle to a sheepsfoot blade and you'd have a knife that could take on the toughest jobs, IMO.
