Do you hike with an SLR?

Now that's what I'm talking about! :D

Doc

Nothing off topic, at all, about wildlife photography!!!!

Actually I would request that either you or one of the mods delete those ASAP.

Aside from the fact that they are totally OT, many of us access the forum from work and I for one do not need my boss walking by while I am scolling through a bunch of pictures of strippers.

Edited to keep you happy, but really, lighten up a bit dude. I'm not trying to be a d*ck or anything but isn't one supposed to be doing work at work, and not reading and posting on forums?...Just saying.

For what it's worth, they're not strippers, they're models that were hired to work a huge corporate car show in Montreal and my post was just a play on the words "Wild Life". Lots of the other guys here have commented on how much they like the pics so I figured it would be a nice Friday treat. Look at Doc-Canada's post directly below yours as a prime example.

Anyway, not here to kick up a stink. I get paid to shoot these events for automotive emagazines and print magazines so it's not like I need a knife forum to post my pics.

Have a good one and let's get back on topic!

I took mine on a 4 day rim to rim of the Grand Canyon. I figured I may never be dwon there agian so I wanted to be able to get some good quality pics. A "pocket" camera never would have picked up what my D-SLR did.

So any time I am thinking I want to take pics, I do take mine. I created a UL case utilizing a stuff sack and some blue foam sleeping pad.

Thank you for editing your work, in the future, try to be more respectful when addressing your responses. mdauben was offended by what you posted. You should not get defensive about his reaction and then attack him personally for poor work ethic.

You can never control who will or will not be offended by your post. The pictures were off topic, and while they are acceptable to some people, obviously based on the response of one member, they aren't acceptable to everyone. The proper thing to do is to acknowledge to the individual their concerns, apologize for offending them, and indicate that you were not aware that your first post would distress others and you will consider this in how you post such material in the future.

Man, I'm really trying to bite my tongue here. I'm hoping that mdauben's remarks were made tongue-in-cheek.

Any forum that finds it inappropriate to post a few tasteful pictures of attractive young women isn't any forum I want to belong to.

Ken, I love ya but I dissagree.

He didn't have to edit the pics, he did and has every right to say what he did.

Its impossible to go round trying to please everyone....

I'm just upset that I didn't get to see the pics he posted:grumpy:

My apologies to mdauben and all who were offended by my post. As mentioned before, I wasn't trying to be an idiot and I wasn't trying to attack him for his work ethic. I just found in interesting that someone would call me out for posting pics of "strippers" that could get him in trouble for browsing this forum at work. If you're at work, why are you browsing and posting on forums? If your boss is lenient enough to allow that then pics of beautiful non-nude women shouldn't be an issue.

Like I said, it was innocent humor playing on the words "wild life". I guess it's just the guys over on the RAT sub-forum that appreciate these pics, and get my style of humor, but nonetheless, I'll refrain from posting them here.

Again I'm sorry for those that took offense, it wasn't my intent, really.

Here are some nature shots as a peace offering:

I'd be happy to email em to ya, just say the word! :)

Thanks kgd, glad you like them.

Hey Sharp Eye, sorry for derailing your thread buddy, my bad! To get back on topic, it's a no win situation as far as weight goes when hiking with an SLR. If you've got a lower end SLR it likely doesn't have the sealed magnesium alloy body that can take inclement weather or hard knocks. Even if it can, chances are your lens of choice can't take the abuse.
With that in mind I always keep my camera in some sort of bag to protect it, just in case, and to me it's worth it. You don't want to turn your hundreds to thousands of dollars of camera gear into a big paperweight.

Thanks for that, it is much appreciated.

It was not really a matter of "lightning up". I was not "offended" and I enjoy pictures of pretty women as much as anyone, but only in the proper time and place. On the other hand, I know there are women and people with strong religious beliefs who frequent the forum to talk about knives, the outdoors, etc. and they could be offended by photos of scantily clad women where they should have no reason to expect to see them.

I'm not trying to be a d*ck or anything but isn't one supposed to be doing work at work, and not reading and posting on forums?...Just saying.
Everyone is entitled to a break once in a while. Some people in our office go outside several times a day to smoke, others take a few minutes several times a day to catch up on private email or read on-line forums. Its specifically allowed in the company manual so don't worry. ;)

Anyway, to get back on topic. :D

I go back and forth with my backpacking camera gear. At times, I will bring everything but the kitchen sink (DSLR body, several lenses, tripod, reflectors, etc.). Other times I will limit myself to a simple pocket camera.

It really depends on what I want to acomplish with my photography on that trip. If all I want is some snaps of myself and my friends to document the trip, I'll just go with the pocket camera. These days, the better pocket cameras can take absolutly phenominal photos so its no big hardship.

On the other hand, if I am going someplace special and want to expend the effort to produce some wall-hanging worthy photos, I'll take the DSLR, etc. When I do that, I generally design my trip around photography. I'll schedule shorter milage per day, not only to off-set the extra weight I am carrying, but to allow for several hours per day to spend on photography (IMO its just not worth brining the whole camera bag with me, if I am not going to spend the time to get the quality of pictures that the set up is capable of).

A DSLR set up can add several pounds to your pack, but with the light weight packing equipment available these days and the generally lighter basis loads, a bit more weight is not as big a problem as it was back in the day.

Hey Mike (mdauben),
I'm not here to make enemies so I assume we're good? I hear what you're saying about the pics being a surprise to the unsuspecting "victim" for lack of a better word.
It was intended in good fun, which a lot of the time gets taken as political incorrectness and that drives me nuts sometimes.

I do sometimes take nude portraits, etc, and my wife has no problem with that and has even offered to come do the make up, etc and turn it into a business! I guess I just take it for granted that not everyone is as liberal as she is.

Anyhow, have a great weekend bro.

Peace.

Oh, yeah, no problems! They were some pretty good photos, too. ;)

I know what you mean and I got the "wildlife" joke, too. Its hard sometimes to know where to draw the line between simple courtesy and "political correctness" BS. Hope I didn't come across as the though police... :p

Cool, I'm glad we're ok! Yeah I'm one of the apparently dying breed of people that still holds open doors for others, gives up my seat on the train/bus for females, elderly, expecting mothers, make a point of saying thanks and you're welcome, etc etc, (momma did a fine job raising me!). Sometimes the PC people just drive me over the edge man, so sorry if I came off a bit brash.

Sharp Eye, we're derailing again! LOL I don't know what you normally carry on your hikes. If you want a small bag for just your camera try one of the LowePro Rezo toploaders (various sizes for different length lenses) or similar toploaders. Or maybe something like the Slingshot. I've got the 200AW version of the Slinghsot but don't really use it anymore. It's tough finding the perfect bag for every occasion, that's why I've got at least a dozen camera bags!

I've seen the stabilizer strap before, but don't recall seeing the harness. I think I'd quicker use the harness and will check one out sometime.

Thanks for the info!

After reading that the strap does not fit tele lenses well, I ordered a harness.
I will let you know how it works.

Since, I'm one of the PC police here. Let me just say that the item below would look far more fashionable if the shoulders straps were about 6" longer and provided more strategic placement of the zoom lens :D :D

I'm guessing you'd want your 300 mm 2.8f hooked in for best effect.
