Do you ignore the pen blade on your slippies?

Nope, I use it plenty, although to be fair I'm an equal opportunity kinda guy blade wise. I sometimes find myself looking at the knife, say a stockman, deciding which blade to use and just saying, heck I haven't used the sheepsfoot in a bit! So maybe I'm odd in that(one of us odd? I think the odd one around here would be the guy who denied his oddity). I use the pen, or sheepsfoot mostly for precision, and/or piercing types of tasks, as well as cleaning the nails, etc. I have a habit of reshaping spay blades actually, closer to a pen shape, taking the hump off the top and maybe cutting down the belly a little, although I have been appreciating the spay more just lately for some reason.
So yeah, I use the pen plenty, about equal to any of the other shapes.

Grandpa always said don't use the little blade it's sharp, and now over the years it appears I like this blade most. I think he was just saving the small blade for himself and was scared a kid would mess it up.

I'm a big pen blade fan. In fact that's one of the reasons I'm not more into the Victorinox alox models, because they don't have a pen blade.

Well, sure, Blues, I know about that one. But I just can't see carrying a SAK that doesn't have at least a few tools on it. It's a fine knife, to be sure - just not really my cup of tea.

Nevermind, then. I was only responding to what you actually wrote, not trying to convince you to purchase or carry the knife.

The Victorinox Cadet II has a pen blade in place of the nail file of the original Cadet. It seems that they've discontinued it, though. I really love mine. That pen blade is much nicer to have than the nail file.

I have acquired quite a few slippies as a hobby now at knife shows, ebay, garage sales, pawn shops etc. I have my certain make, and model preferences. However, I find that I almost have no use for the pen blades for the ones that have them. In fact, I do not even invest time to sharpen this red headed step child. I may even avoid models now with them unless it is a Holy Grail knife. Do any of you have a specific use for this 3rd string blade? Maybe I am missing an opportunity that I am not aware of. Thank you in advance for your thoughts. I am taking the tykes (all 5 of them) for a morning hike in the Simi foothills, and will check back later. Now, I have to go decide which knives I will take on the hike. Life is great!

Kept razor sharp, I could field dress a small deer with them. I usually just use them on groundhog. The spear/pen doesn't require a finger under it , it "skis" thru the hide/pelt. On a bet I field dressed a black bear with the main blade of my peanut, that's how I got the nickname "Peanut". She weighed in around 280 after dressing out.
