I used to keep a serrated POS liner lock in the glove compartment. More recently I changed this to a pair of EMT scissors instead. The only issue is that I might not be able to reach whatever is in the glove compartment and, depending upon the severity of the crash, it may not be in the glove compartment when I need it.

is must-read for this topic. Read Gollnick's response located roughly in the middle of that thread. Any item that one wants to have in one's hands following an accident must be firmly affixed and within reach.

I was about to say, hey we all got knives, WTF! This thread got me thinking. Maybe it's time for an upgrade.

I keep a seatbelt cutter, windshield smasher, emergency utility and tactical blade by my side in the car always. My favourite choices are Lightfoot Predator or, more heavy duty, Busse NO. No use taking half measures.

My "emergency" knife is a Spyderco Delica, in the right cargo pocket on my BDUs. I thought about this a few months ago, and switched my clip knife carry from a back pocket to the cargo pocket, as I can reach the cargo while sitting down, but not the back without squirming around. My wife also leaves her CS Recon Tanto in our minivan between the front seats. It's not "secured" as it sits in a cardboard box that we use as the "console", but it sits down out of sight and is also our anti-carjack system!

I've got a Spyderco Rescue and a Benchmade Rescue Hook in my truck. Hope I never have to use them :)

Not a seatbelt cutter, per se, but I keep a Spyderco Calypso Jr. SE in my car in addition to whatever else I am carrying.

A Blackie Collins Buddy System Knife hanging from the mirror, in my wife's car and one in mine. They're always there along with a automatic center punch velcroed to the emergency brake to pop out windows.

Normally keep maglites in each door map compartment which could be used to break windows and a reground Endura with a big rattail lanyard and an ASP baton in the center compartment in the dash.

This is going to change though. When I was rear-ended on the interstate last month everything in the center console went flying. I could not have found the Endura or the ASP if I had to.

I think that I am going to get a sheath from Mike Sastre and some big cable ties and lash it to the steering column. I also thought about getting acouple of those BM Rescue Hooks and pop-riveting them to the underside of the dash.

I have a BM 5W in nylon sheath secured with para chord to my cigarette lighter on my dash. I also have one of the SOG folders in the console between the front seats of my Jeep.

....Up until now I have had a SpyderCard in my Center Console (I gave my BM Rescue Hook to my Dad), but now after hearing all of this I think it is time to get a dedicated seatbelt cutter/window breaker that I can ZipTie down....One for my car and one for my Fiancee's car (possibly the SW 911 1st Response).

Apart from the several :D on my person, I (as a LEO and Miltary vet) keep a Busse Steel Heart II. This is not so much to rescue myself, but I have come upon several wrecks and wouldn't hesitate to use the Busse to cut open a vehicle if needed. For those of you that don't know Busse's, they are for extreme use.

Good Evening All-

The dynamics of a serious accident will have EVERYTHING flying around the cabin of your automobile if not well-secured. In addition to the one-handed folder clipped to my pocket, there is a Benchmade Rescue Hook attached to the rearview mirror with velcro. It is very secure.

The supplied nylon pouch wraps completely around the mirror stalk and does not interfere at all with driving. My friends and family are aware of where it is located in case of need. It is a great little tool for its intended use.

If I were to encounter someone else involved in a serious accident, I won't even bother with the little Rescue Hook. Same as EdwardB, I'll get out and obtain the Busse Steel Heart E that's lashed in the trunk. This choice would also allow you to smash glass and/or chop away sections of seat/dashboard/console etc.

Keep your fingers crossed that we never have to encounter a serious automobile wreck with people trapped inside...in the event we do, at least we knife knuts will be in a position to assist. That's more than the sheeple can say.
