Do you keep your knife boxes?

I keep all my boxes, including any paperwork and original wrapping. You never know which knives become classics after 20 years, and having the packaging greatly enhances the value. Since I keep most of my knives in their boxes, I don't have that much difficulty with storage.

I keep all of mine. You never know when something needs to be moved out to make way for something else that catches your eye.

LoL, yea I keep the boxes cause I tend to flip knives after I tire of them or don't use them.

yea i like to keep them. i mean your collection isnt complete without a wall of boxes

I blame the collectors for adding needless values to cardboard boxes.

Obviously the values are not needless given there is demand and or need for the boxes, moreover if it adds more money to the overall equation isn't that a good thing if you decide to collect i.e keep the knife, or sell? Think about it, this helps further turn what is typically considered a wasting asset (meaning overall knives typically depreciate much likes vehicles, travel trailers, etc.) and helps some of them turn into true assets which actually appreciate in value. I think that is kinda of cool. Additionally there is now a market for just knife and or guns boxes for certain models, been to a gun show lately? So again we have added another facet into our overall economy, how is this a bad thing, as what you deem cardboard boxes have been turned into a valuable commodity?

Just so I have this straight your blaming market participants for things occurring in the market, am I right? Observant aren't you as that is typically how markets operate. For the record I keep all of the boxes (knives, guns, and other stuff as well) and all I have is users or back ups waiting to be used when and if the time arises.

I keep them after learning the hard way. The first time i went to sell a knife and didnt have the box is when i realized that people want the box the knives came in!! So now I keep them all and receipts! The only boxes i dont save are Striders! :D

For a person that tries to belittle my ability to observe, you yourself didn't really observe what I was trying to point out; that the collectors themselves are what attached pointless values to dead trees that has been turned into cardboard boxes. It's the collectors that thinks there's values to boxes and proclaim that there is worth in them thus bringing up the price based on collector's perceived demand. It's the materialistic mentality that thinks boxes has some useful worth outside of sitting there looking pretty.

So you're talking with the mentality of a collector while I'm seeing it from the outside and talking about the foundation of a collector's mentality and their attachment to empty collective items that has no useful use outside of looking all pretty.

We only live once and we cannot bring the boxes to heaven so why worry about it? Just use the all the knives for it's intended purposes as nothing lasts forever.

I'll try to explain it this way. Someone who keeps the knife with the box/packaging is much more likely to have taken good care of the knife. Since I and most collectors prefer knives LNIB, we tend to believe the condition of knife is truly "LNIB" if it still comes "in the box".

This is true for all collectibles, and is not limited to knives. For certain items (like toys) the original box/packaging can add 50% to the collectible value.

I personally believe that the type of person who has kept the box, tends to keep better care of the knives as well. Personal belief and I'm sticking to it.

Sharp objects denied from being used for it's intended created-for function just for the sake of being collected, box and all...Materialistic America.

No joke. This is one of the reasons I don't help people move. Most people have a bunch of useless crap that they only touch when moving there junk from one place to another. I truly don't know how people live like that. Not being owned by your possessions is so freeing. That piece of mind is worth more then you can sell a box for. I don't care how fancy it is.

Yep! And proud of it!

I try to keep an open perspective, but you like to judge others it would appear.

Try going the other way and you'll never look back. And don't ask me to help you move. :D

On the contrary, I keep a realistic view on things. You on other hand rather not expand to other horizons such as my perspectives it would appear and thus label me as such.

Sharp objects, meet life. Life, meet sharp objects. Now lets get to work.

I don't mind holding on to knife boxes but I won't keep any clamshell packages. I'm mostly not-so-sentimental about things and I don't have many collections, so saving space isn't really an issue. I've gifted a few knives on occasion, and it's nice to present 'em in the original box.

No idea at this point what you are saying.

An example from my collection. I shave with straight razors, typically ones made 60-110 years old. Yes, the more valuable ones have boxes.

Sometimes I use Gilette safety razors, not one of them is less than 40 years old.

Would you prefer throw-away plastic razors?

as for the statement that i highlighted, i could say the same for just about any collectible/valuable item.

having as much of the original item (packaging and all) is never a bad thing. if you have a vintage car, having all the original paperwork, stickers and documents adds not only to the value but to the history of the car. in turn that also makes it more valuable.

if i buy a knife from someone, i enjoy getting all of the original packaging.

I usually do. I generally collapse them and stick them in a drawer somewhere. I often end up selling off my knives so it helps to keep the boxes around - for some reason people seem to be much more inclined to buy a knife if it comes with the box, no matter how much it's been used.
