I'm looking for one so I can post pix on the forum. I'm thinking in the $200-350 range. Does it usually come with the stuff you need to hook it up to the computer? Is pix posting free and how do you go about doing it. Thank you for the help!!!

Chris,

I would suggest going over to www.cameraworld.com when you are ready to buy... they seem to have the best prices (I've been buying from them for years).

Also, you can go to www.dpreview.com and see reviews on all kinds of digital cameras...

Canon makes a little Elph digital in the neighborhood of what you want to spend... maybe a little bit higher. Also, Nikon has a pretty good line too...

Most if not all of the cameras will have what you need to download photos to your computer and the software needed to mess with them. You might have to purchase a memory card reader, but they are available for cheap...

As for posting them, you'll need somewhere to store your images... like photopoint or another type of service. I think others here can answer questions about them. I have server space, so I just transfer my files there and then type in the code to link them when I post here...

If you have any questions... just holler :)

Chris I don't recall if you're one of the guys who also hangs out in the Shop Talk Forum sometimes, but I have a suggestion.:)
After you get your camera go over there, well just do a search on the Shop Talk Forum concerning posting pics and I guarantee you will get some fantastic info!!!!
I need to get our daughter's digital cam and check out posting pix myself. She doesn't use it and said I could use it all I needed if she could do the same with my scanner. :)
Sounds like a deal to me!!!!
There's info on a real simple light box where pix can be taken without shadows that just fascinates the hay'ill outta me. I cannot hardly concieve of a pic without shadows. Al comes in in that dept well too.:)

Chris,
After going thru a few different types I have ended up with a Kodak DX3600. Besides the incredible easy setup, great pix and simplicity it also has a "dock" which makes for 1 step downloading of pix and keeps the camera recharged.

As wisely mentioned above, checkout the web for reviews and deals.

Maybe your first picture will be of the stinky kukri you just won (it was shipped priority yesterday).

YVSA, as to getting 'flat light' just find a well lit area and put the kukri or whatever in a shadowed area without direct light. Voila! No harsh shadow in the pix.

It's out of my league. Chris, you might want to email Mauirob. He had some stuff he was going to sell but I can't recall if he had a dc or not.

I use a Sony DSP 1 for both work and private moments. It give incredible results and is very easy to use. I would recommend to wait past the Holydays season to buy one as the prices are always going down with the new generation coming up. One of the important thing to remember: pixel quality and resolution. The higher resolution allows you to blow up a photo without losing the details or starting to see the pixels dots. I recently came back fromthe Middle-East where I was performing a security survey for a client. Due to the political situation they are a little touchy when they see a camera. My Sony ( who fits in my shirt pocket) allowed me to take photos from a distance at times ( X6 digital zoom) and I was able to blow up the picture X800 before I started to loose the resolution. If you are seriously interested in buying a digital camera spend a little more and you will have a great product. If you go for the Sony, get a 64 MB memory stick (over 200 photos capacity at 1200x1200 resolution, 80-90 photos at 2400 resolution the highest) . The great thing is that you take a picture, you can see immediately the results and discard the shots you do not like. Plus no photo lab fees. I searched the web for the best price . Just enter "sony Dsp-1" in any search engine and you will get a listing (if no luck try: www.google.com.) I save $175 on listed price . Also get the disck adapter to download the pictures. It is worth the money. All and all I spent$860 for the camera ($525), the 64 MB memory stick, an additional battery (a must) and the disk adapter...not to mention rush UPS shipping (over $50) because I was leaving the next day and my regular camera bailed out on me. You can probably get the same deal today for $ 600-650. After X-mas, probably $500. It is well worth it. On this one trip alone I took over 600 pictures. Let me know if you need more details.

Thanks for thinking of me Uncle, but none of my equip is digital. I wish I knew anything about them, but I am a film guy at the moment:) I am however ten feet deep over my head with some new digital equipment(Nikon scanner and photoshop 6.0)--my GOD there's alot to learn!!

Good luck Chris! Can't wait to see your pics:)

I'm using an Olympus D360L right now, but it's discontinued. Very good point & shoot but only has digital zoom - great close shots, but not that good on distance.
Waiting for a price drop, as stated in a post above, to buy the Olympus D510 - 2.1 Mpixels, 3X optical & 9X digital zoom and very decent reviews for a point & shoot.
For pricing try
http://www.pricescan.com/home_digiphoto.asp?sid=46860012
as someone listed usually has close to the cheapest prices you'll find.
