Hey guys, I have a few slabs of really nice birds eye maple with spalting and curl running through it, and I was wondering if knife makers liked to use birds eye maple. I have seen curly "of course" but I just wanted to see if birds eye was something you liked.

I would never have spalted [rotted wood ]. Birdseye looks very nice but is a pain to work . For hand work very sharp tools like chisels are needed as from any direction you are cutting against the grain. With a sanding machine go slow .If you lose an eye glue it back with Elmer's or carpenter's glue.

Its not real spalted like rotted, its just got a big of red/ yellow and green color from staining.

I was thinking of having it stabilzed in my next batch of leopardwood Burl

I would be interested in Birdseye but it would need to be fairly densely packed eyes.

i have been using soem when i can find nice boards

Butch, you put handles of black ash burl on my Fallkniven TK-1 if you remember. It's like the upper photo .Still very nice !!! Thanks

I'd be interested in a some stabilized Bowie blocks, as long as they're not priced more than maple is actually worth.
Charging 50-60-70 bucks for maple is robbery and I refuse to pay it, and have stopped doing business with people who do.
How some folks get away with it is very annoying.

I dont think the board is thick enough for real bowie blocks.

I sell quite a few blocks of the birdseye. I've never had any issues finishing it, or with "eyes" falling out. It definitely has a grain direction and it sands very easily. It also looks really cool when it's dyed.

I've got some I'd like to have stabilized. I was thinking some in black, yellow and natural.

What colors have worked good for you?

I really like the black maple burl I've seen. It has some gold parts that look great. If the birdseye maple looks similar then I'm all for it.

I've done black, green, red and blue. I never tried yellow because the natural look is so close to the yellow in my opinion. If you go to the website at the bottom, I have some blocks up there.

if i was coloring it anything i woudl want more of a goldbrown color but i am more then happy with natural
