Do You Like Massdrop Knives?

It sounds like you would be better off to buy from We or Reate or off the forum?

I've bought one knife from MD. It was a good experience. I surf thru the site about once a week to see if anything catches my eye.

I tend to avoid anything that needs X number of purchases before they make the run tho.

I was looking at the Gent for awhile but never bought one. Then on Black Friday they were discounted by $40 and I received a $20 coupon code email. So it came out to 40 bucks and I couldn't resist. Took exactly 5 weeks to receive it. It's a very nice knife and an even better price.

bought some stuff from massdrop for awhile now, but none of their own knives. none have caught my eye enough at their price points, including that one youre talking about. own a few we knives and like them, so it ain't cause of that either.

I don't hate them, and I don't like them. I've never seen one or heard of them before this.

I think there are actually a few honest gems in the MD collection, not many but some great knives. The Gent is a pretty fantastic knife for it's size, I have a MBK EZC which is pretty comparable but the gent is a better knife IMO for less $$. I actually lost my rosewood one so bought another G10 version. I like the Thresher quite a bit. The Orca is the hi-light for me though, I love that knife. I originally bought a CF mokuti version but never really wanted to carry and use it much. The G10 versions had been sold out for a long time but just recently a couple popped up so I got a green/bronze to go with the CF and have been carrying this one. It's as nice an example as the CF version, might like the stonewash blade a little better. I don't think you could get a Reate this nice for the price anywhere else. I actually tried to get a Lynx but shipping out of China is hosed right now, got a couple e-mails indicating an unknown ship date so I cancelled. Now they say it's sold out. I'm not a real big fan of all the FF knives (except the Gent). I check at least weekly just to see what's going on but there hasn't been anything compelling in a while. At this point it would have to be a pretty fantastic offering to get me to bite.

IMO most of the 'deals' aren't really deals and when the shipping is factored, in you really have to want something they have to pull the trigger. I've never dealt with a company that had such a 'round a bout' uber long shipping process. It's pretty ridiculous.

I thought they stopped doing that... guess I'm back out.
I might be wrong but I don’t think they’ve ever not branded their knives. They may be using a stylized “D” rather than text but the knives still bear a mass drop identity.

Mostly good knives for people who don't know a lot about knives.

Some of my first "serious" knives were CRKT and Strider so by comparison Drop branded stuff looks pretty good to me.

The Ferrum Forge Gent and the Laconico Keen are very well-reviewed knives that were exceptional values before Massdrop/Drop bumped pricing by $20. Both are made by WE. I also bought a Falcon (also made by WE) as a present for my dad, and it wasn't as nice as either the Gent or Keen. They've also had missteps like their first Terzula collaboration changing some details in final production and excessive wait times. My Gent and Keen will probably stick around in my collection for a long time.

Their model of facilitating production of new products by linking designers and high-end Chinese OEMs was novel a few years ago, but now it's being copied by other small brands (e.g. Alliance Designs) and by the OEMs themselves (e.g. Ferrum Forge now works directly with WE/Civivi and Tashi has a line with Reate). That and the price increase seem to have stalled all of their momentum.

Like my Keens. Hate the (Mass)Drop business plan. Not worth a 7 month wait in my case. No more.

I just bought a MD Laconico Keen from a member here and he said it was made by WE knives. I know I like WE knives. Do you all like the knives you have gotten from MD?

I like the two I own, yep. Both great examples of their respective manufacturers' output for an excellent price.

I only got exclusives from MD so far. And I like my colorful flock of Hummingbirds quite a lot ;)

Oh man, I forgot about the Hummingbird! My wife absolutely LOVES hers. Pretty crazy how smooth that knife is considering the blade is only 1.5 inches long. Paying $80 instead of the $135 they normally go for was pretty cool... And to top it off, that was the price for their exclusive which was anodized two colors instead of one.

I haven't been using (Mass)drop for long. Recently bought a watch from them, was pleased with how it went.

However, the assortment of knives they offer is just bad. Most of them are flippers. Out of all the knives I see on there right now, only one (1) has a reversible pocketclip. It's like they forgot lefties exist. Almost all of them are in a variation of modern design. A lot of them look like each other. It's actually kinda pathethic given the so-called 'roots' of the company.

Almost all of their branded knives have a reversible clip, at least from WE and Millitt.

I've taken another look. It seem they added a few knives since my post, and a few of them have a reversible clip. The selection seems to at least contain a few more interesting pieces right now. However, I've noticed the majority of knives on offer right now still don't have a reversible clip. (I've checked just now).
