Most of us have a knife kept around just for those special jobs like opening a bag of drainage stones.

What is your current beater knife? Do you like it?

Mine is an Opinel and I like it. It is a good cutter, takes abuse well, sharpens easily, and I don't worry about ruining it because they are easy to replace.

When I think "Beater," I tend to think much harder work. I have an SRK from CS that I use to take out tree branches. AweXomE blade. Don't care too much for the handle, though. I always get a blister on my index finger from that guard. But then, I have soft, girly hands. Someone needs to make a beater knife for little dandys like me.

My 'beater' knife for odd jobs around the house is an older Chicago Cutlery utility knife, model 61S. Very well suited for most household chores. It's perfect for opening boxes of new shiny knives that'll never be used. :D

mine is my buck juno. Loaded with discoloration and scratches. Its easily replaced but haven't had to yet. Its locks up real well and gets a whole bunch of use.

I'd personally like to see it with steel handles though :)

My first 91 mm Victorinox (Explorer) is my beater. A few years ago when I was not so well versed it either knives or steel finishes I decided to remove scratches on my knife by sanding the blade with ~200 grit. The finish was then horrible, so I kept sanding and now the blade is this sad scraggly thing and the knife is kind of wrecked, but I've since sharpened it and now use it for all of those special jobs that are tough and grimey. I'm without much for funds so I don't usually beat to hard on my folders (as most of them are nice, and the ones that aren't are useless). I like the knife, but I wouldn't EDC because it's a layer too thick and...it's kind of in sad condition :D Someday I want to drill out the pins and replace the blade with a new one

Last winter I found an old CRKT M16 somebody had dropped. I never owned a CRKT before and this one was in rough shape.

I decided it'd make an OK 'garage knife' for stuff like opening packages, bags of fertilizer, cutting tape, tubing, hoses, scraping stuff off my shoes.....

The liner lock was floppy-loose so I pulled it down and retensioned the bar. Gave it an edge, such as it would take anyway - not good even for AUS8.

Do I like my beater knife? No. It's about on a par with your basic prison shank.

I've got a bunch I use as beaters. Gerber AR 3.0, small CRKT Mt. Shasta (both of which sharpen up quite nicely), fully serrated Endura and a large combo edge CRKT/Crawford Falcon that's getting worked into the rotation.

I wouldn't call it my "beater" knife, as I take good care of it, but the one that I use around the house is my REKAT Hobbit Fang...I've wrapped the handle with "Agrip" and it's an excellent little utility knife.

I love my Kabar d-2 Impact (spear point). I use it for everything from yard work, to knocking around in the mountains. I dig with it, open bags of sand for the garden, hack small branches off of trees in my yard, and basically abuse the hell out of it. It is my constant companion. I own a lot nicer knives, but this one is the perfect size to carry and use.

For most jobs I will use a lone wolf t-2, which is also my favorite folding knife

I have a couple older cheap slipjoints I use for dirty stuff. American, not total junk. In the workshop I use razor knifes and boxcutters.

Currently I use an FRN Endura as a beater.

Prior to that it was an SS Endura that got the job done.

I really like the blue fully serrated Delica that I can toss into my left pocket (loose) and use to cut pretty much anything. When I've got that one on me, I can carry whichever nice knife I want and keep it happy.

With the type of knives us knife-freaks buy, we should beat the living hell out of them all. I often cringe at scuffing up a new blade, but to me there isn't much point in blowing a few hundred on a gentle little letter opener thing, so i'll start seeing the scratches and dents as memories of all the times i've used the bugger to slice up whatever needed to be sliced. There is a reason a good knife costs a fair bit. I don't often need to beat up my knives but if i need to, then whatever i have on me should do. Why not eh? i payed enough for it...

All i buy now is Bucks, and a 110 and 119 should handle all my bush work and city carry, as pretty as the oldschool lockbacks and fixed blades are, they'll just be prettier after many a year of service.

I use my all my knives quite hard, not to the point of damaging them, but I will batton a custom fixed blade without hesitation. I work outdoors a lot and can't afford to have a good knife and not use it, so even my prettiest blades have a little scratch or two (no real damage, though, I take good care of my babies).

However, the knives that I would consider beaters are probably my SWAK and my Eriksson #22. They are excellent knives, specially the Eriksson, but for their price you can really abuse them without guilt, or loan them to somebody without worrying about how they'll treat the knife.

The SWAK is great when you have to equip a fairly large group of people with proper knives. Last June-July I worked in an archeological dig, in the first day we had two guys injured by their own crappy folders. Instead of doing something stupid like banning knives (I've seen this happen in other places) our boss asked me to find cheap reliable knives. For less than $100, we got SWAKs for ten people. Problem solved.

Bucks 110 are my beater knives they are cheap to buy so I am not afraid to damage one I have one that is 15 years old and after years and years of hard use it's still good.

My beater is a S&W Cuttin' Horse that I bought at the local farm supply store for $8. It does pretty well working around the house and in the garden but I don't trust the lock.

I also have a FRN Endura I use as a beater. I bought it for an EDC, but quickly tired of the serrations and the bulk of it. In fact, after a month of use at work cutting cardboard, shrink wrap, plastic strapping and other assorted light duty stuff, one day I noticed a notch missing out of the edge! I sent it back to be sharpened out and have used it as a beater ever since.

The only knives I can bring myself to abuse are $0.88 utility knives from walmart. They come with 4 multi-section break away blades. I bought many of them and put them in various locations in the house.
