Do you own a small Dozier fixed blade?

I would appreciate any help you could provide to assist me in choosing between three small Doziers (listed below). These seem to be about what I am looking for in an EDC fixed blade.
The problem is that I do not have any way to handle before buying.
Since these are relatively expensive I would like to make a good choice.

  • Personal Utility
  • Modified Personal
  • Straight Personal
The only thing I have to go by at this point is information on the A.G. Russell website.

ANY comments would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

I have a Straight Personal... one of the best knives I own. Why? It cuts like the dickens, it is just about the perfect size, and I love Dozier's horizontal sheathes. You cannot go wrong with any of Bob Dozier's knives. However, one BIG warning.... you cannot stop at one. You will get more Dozier knives, they are addicting. So far, I have 4... and want at least 3 more models.

I am with Mongo on the "can't stop @ just one'. I have a dozier K2. The heat treatment Bob puts on his d2 blade is second to none. The edge seems to never go away. The K2 has a 3.5 slightly upswept blade that is perfect for EDC. I also own the sweetwater that would also fit the bill for EDC. I would have to say my Dozier knives are by far the best.

You might consider something without the ridged handle like the general utility. I was surprised to find that Bob's smaller knives fit my hand much better than his larger styles. Since you won't be trying one on for size and since finger grooves either fit or they don't you might be safer going with a straighter handle design.

Out of the 3 you mentioned, I own the Personal Utility.
Bought from Bob Doziers table in March '00 and rarely has been out of reach since then.
I immediatly took to the finger grooves despite not liking them on other knives.
FWIW, I have small hands but friends with larger hands like it too.
It's a little cutting machine, small enough to forget it's there...'till you need it.

Face it, you'll end up with all three sooner or later so don't sweat the decision too much ;)

You wont do wrong with any Bob Dozier knife, All his knives are top quality they are all made of D2 and they will hold an edge.

I love my Dozier Whittler. Like that dawg Mongo says, "Ya just can't stop at one!" :)

WOOF!

Hey Ebbtide, I love your model 6 and SO, I too have these except my model 6 has natural micarta and my SO has stag.

I still want a bird and trout, a PGK, and an Ark traveler.

I've owned the K-13 Whittler, the K-17 White River Skinner, and the K-18 Straight Personal. Of all of these I preferred the White River skinner for hunting. The Straight Personal carried better though and was not noticed sticking out under my shirt like the K-17 was. I gave the K-13 to my son. It wasn't my cup of tea really. I think the best fixed blade Bob is making right now is the K-32. But I've always had a soft spot for Wharncliff blades.

I have the Straight Personal and highly recommend it. I also have the Yukon Pro Skinner which I guess is still a fairly small knife, but not really small. The knives you listed are all good choices. The Modified Personal and the Personal Utility are flat ground if you like that, the Straight Personal is hollow ground. The MP and PU have the blanks laser-cut outside the shop, the SP is 100% made inside the shop if that makes any difference to you.

Edit: I'm referring to the Personal Utility on A.G.'s website, not the other knife of the same name on the Dozier website.

Here's the Doziers (with a couple o' sweet, sweet Kreins that jumped into the picture):

Ebbtide, or anyone else that has one, does the Personal Utility have a very slight recurve or is that an optical illusion in the photos I am looking at - it looks like it could go either way?

Torz, THANKS for the information on the hollow grind of the A.G. Russell Straight Personal - it does not mention that on the website - that's the kind of detail I was looking for.

The bone handle on the Personal Utility sure looks nice and tempting - but it is $65 more than the micarta handle.

Thanks to all who have responded so far,

I had to take a better pic :D

No recurve. Prolly lens distortion

The bone is nice, but thinner/flatter.
The micarta is 'bullet proof' and a little more hand filling.
The Ute and Slim Outdoorsman are 3rd and 4th from the right

Ebbtide, nice pic! - and thanks for the info on the thinnner bone handle. It is that kind of info, along with other in this thread, that will it easier to make a good selection without handling the knives first.

Thanks,

Thanx.
The bone isn't a whole lot thinner, and flatter. That doesn't make it feel bad, just different than the more rounded micarta.
I hope that makes sense.
Let me put it this way, I don't regret buying the bone handle, but I can tell them apart by feel:D
