Do you plan to pass down your knife/collection?

I don't have any kids yet, but when I do I definitely will. I would probably start them off with cheaper ones and give them some nicer ones when they're a little older. When I'm dead they can get my ivory Sebenza, by then the ivory will have a nice aged patina just like their old man.

If I have kids, sure. Not like I'm gonna do a viking burial and take them with me when I'm gone...

There are certain knives I want my family to have, certain knives I want passed on to a few friends who enjoy this hobby/passion as much as me and the rest my family has instructions to contact a select few of the lifetime members here to help them get rid of the 300+ knives left or if they choose, they'll keep 'em.

My daughter wants my William Henry, my wife wants my R. Cover drop point slip joint and the rest, customs and all they should sell for the money

My kids are going to have it pretty good and they have a lot of their own gear already. I was discussing how to split up everything with the wife the other day as I was about to go under for surgery. Except for a few close friends, the boys get it all. She all of a sudden had this look on her face and asked "How much stuff do you have?" Luckily I recovered to delay the eventual full disclosure of my costly hobbies.

Well, my sons will get the collection but I'm not sure I want them to know that. One has a small collection of his own he wants to grow and I don't want any "accidents". Maybe I'll tell him they are all going to charity.

My nephew will get most cause he is a knife and gun guy. My wife has made it clear she gets the small William Henry she gave me for Christmas. I carry that in my watch pocket every day.

I don't have kids, and I'm not sure I'll want to, but most of my collection will probably go to my nephews and some close friends.

The youngest of my 'kids', is now 38 years old. They get first pick of whatever I leave behind. Then I expect my Son to sell the rest, and turn the money over to my wife.

For sure... but I have way more knives than they would know what to do with, even if I end up with a bunch of grandkids.

One thing on my "to-do" list is to itemize each knife, with a bit of a story to each one... why I bought it, why is meaningful/important to me, and how my kids should describe it when they put it up for sale on the 'bay when I'm gone :)

That is such a great idea! I hope you go through with it. You'll get a lot of pleasure in doing it and it will be something cherished by whomever reads it once your gone.

That is a great idea! Also include your username/password for bladeforums and others so they can ask for help here.

My son will get my knives when I'm gone, but I'll probably buy him new knives for his own use until then. I have already bought a victorinox pioneer harvester for his first knife, since they're being discontinued.
He just turned one, so I'll wait a while to give it to him. :-)

I've been working on this for most of one year, and not ready yet. I keep changing my mind. I want to gift before I'M DEAD MEAT. This way, I get some enjoyment out of it too. Given some guns/knives already to my sons and their family. They'll get more eventually. But gifting to three sons, three sons-in-law, three male gd-kids. I don't know what I'll do about the girls. Heck, most of 'em don't want a knife.
Trying to give according to their needs: Office-worker, cop, college-kid whiz-kid, big football player tough guys, etc. The money equivalence won't all be the same...too bad. I can't help that. Gifts are running to Spyderco, ZT's, Striders, Emerson, Grayman and CRK, with a custom fixed blade in there for the outdoors guy. I've purchased most of these new or as-new. They're not users. User pass-downs can come later, when I won't care.

I can't take them with me so why not? Hell, have a basket at my wake with all my knives in it and have everyone take one or two. I'm 36 now, I should have a few hundred by the time i kick the bucket.

Till then I'll just keep doing what I'm doing and enjoy the one life long hobby I've had.

I'm sure my kids will get a few. They may not have much use for dozens of knives though, not everybody does. So far so good though, my 4 year old daughter always wants me to pull the knife out so she can "see the spider".

I sure hope so. Right now I have two daughters. 8yr and 1yr olds. I am just starting to teach my oldest about safety and useability of knives. I really hope I have a son though.

My wife knows how much my collection is worth, so the majority of it will be up to her. If she needs to sell some of them to cover expenses, or sell all but a few so she can retire early, that's fine with me. I am sure she will keep a few of my favorites for sentimental value, and a few for the kids.

Interesting Question. It would really would be wonderful to give your kids/family with a huge collection of amazing knives. I'd like to be buried with a sebenza tho... :)
