Do you pocket without a clip?

Assuming a fairly empty pocket, can you deploy faster while drawing less attention? I just started carrying so I'de like to hear what you prefer for SD.

I prefer a Glock 27 for self defense.

Deploy faster by digging around in my pocket, then pulling the knife out? No. Pocket clips for the win.

Common sense will tell you you can't get something out of the bottom of a pocket as you can at the top, especially since you have no way to control the orientation in the pocket when it's carried without a clip.

I carried clipped tactical folders for years, but now I use fixed blade neck knives and am currently working towards a fixed blade carried in an unobtrusive belt sheath.

Same but with a G29...

As a backup SD I have a kershaw Shallot I carry in my back left pocket, I cut a wave in it and I draw it left hand then wave it open into a backhand grip, I can draw and deploy the knife in about one second (tho I constantly practice) so for me clipped on is muh much faster.
Now that I'm carrying a 3.5" blade in my front pocket for my main use knife (I EDC 3 knives) I'm thinking of replacing the shallot with a wave'd version of the Matriarch 2.

If you've never heard of a wave youtube it... The fastest way to draw and deploy a folding knife.

30SF for me. Just went from a Kahr back to a Glock and the 30SF got hold of me and wouldn't let me go. As far as knives go, I don't carry anything in my knife pocket (RFP) except a knife... never have. So there's nothing else in there to get in the way of me drawing my knife out of my pocket.

I take the clips off of all my knives. When on a job I have two dedicated knife pockets : one for a small folder and one for larger folder.

Easy access with no probs whatsoever.

Clips for me.
I lost so many knives out of pockets till clips came along.
I'd have a whole whack of "traditionals" if they hadn't fallen out everywhere from playgrounds as a kid, to the woods as an adult.
Get a hole in your pocket and it's gone.
The only clipless knife carried by me is a Swisschamp in the backpack.

This... this is the #1 reason why I'm a 'modern folder' guy. Don't know how many times that I found my SAK under my desk at work or under the driver's seat of one of my cars... for some reason an unclipped knife is the first thing to fall out of your front pockets, and sadly, the pockets on so many men's khakis are just too damn shallow to be useful. Have lost far fewer knives with pocket clips.

Reaching in, pulling out, and opening a knife? Faster? Of course not. But with a number of my knives with bulky clips, those get removed and I carry in a horizontal belt sheath. Knives are just so much more comfortable to hold without them. I should have a couple of custom sheaths arriving tomorrow that I designed to allow for horizontal or vertical belt carry, or clipped in the pocket. Can't wait to use them.

I can't stand having a loose knife in my pocket. It always seems to shift in the most uncomfortable position or somehow turn itself completely around. The only time I'll drop the knife in my pocket is if I do not want someone to see the clip.

Not to mention that I'm scared to death that the blade may somehow open up a little and geld me.

This x 1,000. They always turn sideways and then dig into my leg with every step or whenever I sit down. PITA. I likes my clips!

Im pretty sure there are CC laws with folders in cali, but maybe im wrong? I clip erry day

Typically use the clips on every knife I own except my Vic's... Seeing as they have a decided dearth of clips. Otherwise, it's not even a consideration of something like "draw time," it's just that I don't want a 2-4 oz chunk of steel floating around my slacks, or getting turned sideways in my jeans. Who needs that?

I have lost good knives that were in my pocket. I've never lost one with a clip...and it's always right where I expect it to be.

My main fighting weapon while out and about is a G19. Althought my AR-15 and Shotgun are more effective in other scenarios. I have over 350 hours of training in 2013 with pistols, rifles, and shotguns. My main fighting knife though is a 599 Fox Karambit with Emerson wave. I use the clip on my strong side front pocket. I have to use the clip to always ensure that the knife is orientated and positioned where I expect it to be - so when under stress, it is right there. I practice this under stressful conditions with a training partner as a bad guy to ensure that I can deploy this knife during a real attack in all various positions - especially on the ground. I have selected this knife as a fighting knife over others because of the deployment time. Because it is a karambit with the Emerson wave, I can access it under the affects of stress and adrenaline with just one finger throught the loop on the knife, and then pull - 2 steps and I have a deployed holder with a fighting grip on it. I can deploy and rip flesh in under one second with this knife. I also carry a Ka-Bar TDI on my support side as a backup. Skills that you may be required to perform under stress, must be developed under stress.

Yes and no. If you'd like a more informative answer, you'll have to pay the hourly rate just like everyone else.

I always take the clips out, always.
It's true that sometimes it shifts to uncomfortable positions but i never used a knife that was more comfortable with a clip than without it and that's the bottom line.
Just my $0.02.
