Do you Practice?

If you watch SR Johnson's Sub Hilt Fighter DVD, he puts his pin holes a few thousandths above center because our eyes perceive that as "correct".. he picked that up from Bob Loveless iirc.. Maybe this is one of those cases, even though it's right it looks wrong to the human eye?

Well I was putting a real edge on it today and looking straight down on it the back pin is a bit high and does throw off the flow.

I like your knife. Does it do work? If so, I would be happy with it and use what you learned to do a little better on the next one.

Oh it works, but it was just a piece of scrap to start with. All I was doing when I started that practice session was seeing if I could hollow grind. I can just not that well yet, it is something I need to practice more to be able to say it is another tool in my skill set. Once I had finished the hollow grind attempt I decided to do a little file work practice. Well it was about a month after I did the grind and I wanted something to do while waiting for a couple to come back from HT. When the file work turned out as good as it did I decided to do a home HT on it and throw a set of scales on it. Then my brother saw it, liked the look of the file work and gave me the cost of the good scales that ended up on it. So I finished it up as it looks in the OP and gave it to him.

All and all I am out no money on it and I got some practice, can't go wrong with that.

I'm making my first knife and been working on it about a week or so and just this thread has pointed out so many things I had started to have questions about with more questions arising every time I go to the shop. I enjoyed the comments about practice. Boy I need plenty. Can someone point me to a thread or pointers on the different methods for the grind line placement and fixtures that can be made. I've done some draw filing on stuff other than knife making and do pretty well Im sure it will improve with plenty of practice. The grind line is the big mystery right now. great thread

Just what is the mystery about grind lines for you? If you want plans for a file jig take a look at the one I used for my first knife it may give you some ideas
