RIT is commonly used to dye plastic handles, like the Spyderco FRN handles. Should work for Zytel too. (A quick Google search says it will.)

But you still have to order two sets of scales.

Really? You can dye black FRN to other colors? If that's the case I'd like to make my Cara2's scales blue like the Endura.

No, you can only dye light to dark.

As I understand it, fairly well to FRN.

There's a YT vid of dyeing yellow Salt 1 handles orange, one sorta half-n-half. Going to do it to my Dragonfly Salt.

Cord wrapped is okay but scales are so much nicer. Get scales, definitely worth it.
