Do you prefer carry With or without fire steel loop?

I like the thought of the blade and fire starter together. Sort of "the two fundamental tools" not being seperated ... ying and yang in theory?
My best bush blade has a hole drilled up the handle (behind the pommel) with a ferro rod in it. I'd do that to every knife I own if i could.

I like them, although I don't currently have a knife/sheath that is so equipped.

If I absolutley MUST have a firesteel on my sheath, I just use a ranger band or tie it to the beltloop. My firesteel (LMF Army) is on a piece of cord along with a 35mm can of cotton balls and a scraper. I usually just stuff it in my pocket.

I like the firesteel on a knife I would use as a edc around the camp or hiking.

Dannyboy - Looks like you've sewn that by hand, have you? BTW nice work.

I prefer a sheath to have the loop. It's not a dealbreaker if it doesn't but given the choice I'd rather have it.

Having thought about it for a bit, I think I prefer a sheath with a few grommets so I can attach or detach other items at will.

Now I need somebody to make me one. . .

Foilist - Can you try making one yourself? It's always the first thing I think, thats all.

I like it because it puts the firesteel in a defined spot no matter where I'm going or what activity I'm doing. I can just grab the knife in its sheath, and the firesteel is there. Both function together as a unit, and I like having them connected in one holder.

.

 Exactly, no fumbling around to figure out which pocket you put it in.

to me, firesteel are more fashion piece then used eqiupment. I have some sheaths w/ a loop but don't use 'em.

Though I have made a ton of the firesteel loops for customers, I usually prefer just a clean sheath for my own uses. No real cogent arguments against, I just seem to be more traditional in my approach to some things.

That sheath is absolutely gorgeous.

Is the leather treated?

To the OP

Personally it's 6 of one, 1/2 a dozen of the other.

I somehow managed for years without a firesteel at all, let alone having one attahed to a sheath

I can see +/- for both.

What do you prefer (cause at the end of the day it's what works best for you that matters  )

Kind regards
Mick

Hi everyone,
Do you frefer to carry your knife and firesteel together in the same sheeth?
or do you prefer the knife to be separate?

I honestly prfer that my sheath has a pouch for a firesteel and some other things, but barring that that yes I definitely want a firesteel loop. That doesn't mean it will be the only knife or firesteel on me though.

That is a great point Mick. Another aspect is the size of the loop always stays the same as the firesteel gets smaller. From a convenience standpoint, it has it's merits and I use them as well. I have also cut them off of some sheaths because they just do not belong with some knives. Sometimes a production sheath is great, other times there are aspects that need to be eliminated.

It all depends on the knife and where i will be taking it I guess.

I like the firesteel loop, even though I don't always use it. It is like the extended tang, I don't use it often but there is something to be said for the fact that it is there if or when I want to use it. That said, I never use a good knife on the firesteel.

Never say I NEVER do anything..... :D

BTW, I'm on the both camp. Sometimes I don't want it with me, but then again, sometimes I wouldn't mind it attached to me, just in case.......

Just had JRE make this sheath for my tusker. I asked them to include the firesteel loop because I've had too many lighters and firesteel fall out of my pocket, or get lost in the bottom of my pack. Doesn't take up any room, solves a storage/packing problem, and since I usually use the spine of my knife to get a spark on the steel, my 2 fire-starting tools are right there together.

But, as is usually the case, it always comes down to personal preference.

As for the pocket, I took 3 triangle sharpmaker rods (diamond, medium and fine), cut them to size, and they fit perfectly into the front pocket on the sheath. Again, personal preference...I've run into situations where I wish I had different sharpeners with me in the field so why not stick them with the knife.

When I received my recent Condor Rodan, I replaced the factory sheath with one of my own. For some unknown reason, I decided to install a pocket on the Rodan's sheath. The pocket does hold a ferro rod (or Doan), some tinder, a button compass and whistle. In the past, I never liked pockets on my sheaths either but, this one doesn't seem to add any bulk to an already large knife. Perhaps I'm just getting fickle as I grow older. :)

Nice work. So clean.

I agree it depends on the size of knife...small knives or IWB sheaths obviously not...larger knives for chopping, yes, and I would add another loop for an Eze Lap Steel to straighten out rolls in the edge if the large knife hits a stone...on my webbing knife or on a Bushcrafter knife I also like it as I know where it is at and don't like stuff in trouser pockets etc if I have to move quickly...walking 20 miles with stuff in trouser pockets is uncomfortable IMO...I much prefer to carry kit in a smock than in trousers...but if I take the jacket off I like the basics still on my belt. I think it is a good point well made that a knife and the ability to light a fire are useful to have in a difficult situation.

I'm not a huge fan of adding pouches and stuff to knife shealths but those firesteels are pretty small and they move around to much in my pockets so I find it ok to have them in a dedicated firesteel loop. The firesteels rides with the knife I use as scrapper. That's a complete grab and go package. One think I hate is preparing my gear before heading out so anything that makes it quicker is good for me. I already have plenty of stuff in my pockets when I don't use them to gather tinder or chestnurs... so there's actually more risk to inadvertly loose the firesteel while digging for something else then while having it in some pocket.

That said I don't mind it and use it when available but I don't consider it an essential feature and agree it's somewhat a gimmick.
