Do you prefer customs to mid-techs?

Not rich enough to worry about that too much. I suppose I could sell the cheaper knives I've got, but there's good reasons I bought them.

I think the question also has a lot to do with where you are in the world.

Example: I can either get 2 customs made by exceptional maker locally for the price of a unique graphic Sebenza at retail, here in South Africa.

That means supporting a local maker, I can get hold of him with a simple phone call and one builds a relationship with those makers.

I can get a hand made product from makers at a cheaper cost then buying a Spyderco Military. Either shipped or at retail. FYI. The Spyderco Military costs at retail what you pay for a Sebenza in the USA.

The opposite is also true. For those outside SA the same knife I can get for a cheaper price will cost more because of import tax etc.

The same can be seen with many of the European countries.

Many factors come into play, but at the end, you buy what you want to have.

My knives really need to be carriable, usable, and not mind a scuff here and there. There are ideas I have of how a knife should be built. As far as folders go, the Sebenza hits the nail on the head for me. A folding knife would have to be fairly similar but improved in build quality for me to consider paying more for a custom. I've paid less for a couple customs that were worth what they cost but did not float ze boat. I have and have had a few custom FBs that have all been spectacular. My current fav is surprising... A Dendritic Steel Boye Basic 3, which are now cast and ground by Knifemaker JP Holmes.

I guess I just want high quality, non fancy, simpler, ect. It needs to really compete in lots of different ways to what I have and my ideas about what I like.

as far as folders I carry a customized benchmade adamas. I guess I was just lucky to find a production knife that fit me needs perfectly

Have to agree with locutus . That sebenza is a beauty :eek::eek::eek: . Complex design while keeping that simple sebenza look

I prefer high quality, how it got there doesn't really matter to me.

I make knives by hand personally but look up to those who have the knowledge to do it on a larger scale.

Just checked out the YouTube channel. Nice looking knives. Although I don't know what I'd do with knives that thick, possibly pry a truck open???

Thanks, I appreciate you watching! I make knives from .049" to .375" thick, it just depends on the final use.

Most of my thicker or prying style knives go to those who serve, they need a knife that will make it through tough circumstances.

...Most with thicker spines still have thin edge geometry and reduced weight in all the right places.

OK, back to the topic! Custom vs Midtech! :)

I prefer custom for fixed blades I have been EDCing smaller under 3" fixed blades since January this year. For folders I like a well made and tested knife with the tight tolerances that the Modern CnC can offer. To me if a maker uses a modern machine like a CnC or a laser to cut out the blade is no different than if he stood at a grinder. Its just evolution in the industry just like in firearms and aerospace. A new Lambo or the latest and greatest Super Car is all hand build but using only the latest technogly and tools.

I like both... it just depends. Each can be good or bad at times. If I had to choose one, I'd probably choose mid-techs honestly. But it's like a 60/40 choice :D
