Do you read books?

I am a book reader, much better than anything on the boob tube. I usually get them used and when finished send them off to the troops. There is a good website called Books for Soldiers, care packages for the mind. It only costs a couple of bucks for media mail and I know they will be read, hopefully passed around. It is a great way to get rid of good books for which you no longer have storage space. Here is the link if interested.

Thanks for sharing these.

I have piles of books that I'm reading, about ten at a time now I think. ADHD probably. I've gotten away from fiction and have turned to biographies/autobiographies of historical figures/woodcraft figures, and historical books (war/regional/anything historical really). Of course, I like to find books on knives, guns, cutlery, gadgets etc. There is a used book store chain in western Maryland, I've scored some pretty good knife books there. I think they caught on though, because these books are now only their website, not in their stores. Nothing crazy like Levines 4th, but I still hold out hope (I have one dog eared copy and one copy that looks like the dog got it). I bought my buddy's Kindle Fire, and have been thinking of loading it with podcasts and free books, but you can't beat a regular book. I grew up on Tolkien, Crichton, King, and developed a big interest in the gritty post apocalyptic Mad Max style stuff. William Gibson and Philip K Dick rounded out my scifi influences. Many others, Heinlein wrote a great book in Starship Troopers, the movie not so much.

I've got books on mafia hitmen, an old book on the customs of plains Indians in the 19th century and a book on the Yuba City massacre. If it's a cheap book, or free, I'll pick up anything that interests me. I love reading stories about the mob, I love reading about the plains Indians, part of my heritage. I don't know why I picked up the Yuba City book, but I'm going to read it.

Just finished The Walking Drum and The Last Of The Breed. Both good and the only non-western novels by L'amour I think.
great book, once I started reading it I couldn't stop. Got it on a Friday, finished on Monday, I think I've read it half dozen times since.

Think I'm gonna have to read it again now.
There's a whole series, each as great as the last imho.

This Summer I read the Longmire series by Craig Johnson. I really enjoyed it on TV and the books even more. Johnson is funny and the characters really develop in the books. New book coming in September, new episodes on Netflix, too.

After finishing Longmire, I have been reading the Joe Pickett series by C.J. Box. These are about a Wyoming game warden and his family. They're pretty good, interesting plots and stories. Some great characters, Nate Romanoski for one, you only want him as a friend. I'm on book 6 and there are close to 20!

I'll give a big thumbs up for the Joe Pickett series by C. J. Box. I picked up the first one on your recomendation here and am already through the first five of them.

I also like kindle unlimited. I have been reading a lot of zombie apocalypse books and PA books in general the last couple of years. I find that reading on a kindle is easier for me than using paper books, and I rarely buy paper ones any more. I usually read 3-4 books per week and the kindle makes keeping track of which one I am reading, and is pretty good about syncing with my phone.

For those of you that like Fantasy novels, I would recommend the Malazan Book of the Fallen series by Steven Erickson. I have been reading that series lately and really like it.

I started those, reading three or four of the books and got bogged down. It is a very slow moving series or that was my judgement back three or four years ago.

I got that with the Wheel of Time series. What I've noticed about the Malazan books is that I have to pay attention to them a little more than other books I've read.

There are still characters that haven't even been introduced in book 3 of the Malazan Book of the Fallen series. It's a convoluted, complex story but it's by far my favorite series of books.

That being said, if Deadhouse Gates didn't reel you in on the series with the Chain of Dogs events I don't think you'd like the rest of it. Felisin's story line was pretty painful to slog through though, that's a fact.

If the Wheel of Time series had stopped after the first or third book it would have been a much better story IMO.

Yeah, I really got into the story during the Chain of Dogs. I just started book 7. So far, I really like the character of Karsa Orlong, and the Tehol Beddict-Bugg storyline is great.

Might have to dig them out if I am starved for something to read. The Jordan Wheel of Time books definitely slowed down after about the 5th book. I felt that Jordan had pretty much sold out to the publisher at that point to make a large buck. The last three were great.

Been leafing through this book this evening. Bought it a few years back while I was in school. Definitely not for someone with a weak stomach due to the photos. It's a good book, but I keep thinking that this book basically tells me on how to get away with murder as well.

I've been reading comic books lately (Star Wars Old Republic ), and I keep them on my phone because that way they're always with me. I got a large phone (Samsung Note 4) specifically to be used as a reader since I also keep my college textbooks on it as well. I don't read many novels, the last one I read was the companion to the new Star Wars movie, and the next most recent was probably 2-3 years before that!

As an educator, I can't not say it, so please bear with me. If you have kids, buy them books, lots of books, all the books you can get your hands on. Real books too, not only kindle or whatever. Not that kindles are bad, but kids, especially younger kids should have real books with real pictures. They get enough screen time as it is.

Been reading Hillary's America: The Secret History of the Democratic Party by Dinesh D'Souza on my Kindle. Interesting.

Glad you're enjoying them, I'm on Book 9. I get them from the library, on Kindle, always on hold for a week or two.
