Do you remember your first knife? The one that started it all, made you lust and want MORE!!! The ONE knife that made you say, this is some good $hit, I have to get another one. Or, if it wasn't your actual First knife, then what about the ONE that got you into the whole "knife hype."

Try to remember which knife fits in the category above and say a little bit about it.

Mine was a Red Swiss Army: Original SD. Small looking back at it now, but back then it was a "Real Knife." I carried it all throughout my Boy Scout career. All the way from tiger cubs up to Eagle Scout about four years ago. The longest EDC knife ever, I retired it now, but I bought one in black and that stays with me everywhere.

My very first knife was a sak when I was about five years old. But the first knife that got me "into" knives was a BM 910HSSR.

My first pocket knife was a Camillus my dad had blunted the edge on so I didn't hurt myself, I think I was 8 or 9 years old. I carried it until I was in the 7th grade and graduated to one of his hand-me-downs of what brand I don't know. My really first knife that caused my hype was a Buck 110 I bought for $14.95 at a Gibson's store. I carried it for years until I touched my first handmade knife. It was all over then on production stuff for a while, I was hooked on custom knives!

Then technology got better fast, and steels got better, and production companies got on the bench made knives bandwagon, and now we've got a world of both customs, bench, and production made knives with better steels, better construction, and a world of designs to choose from than we've ever had. I get into a knife store and I'm like a blind dog in a meat house.....don't know which to bite next! You have to really dig in and get serious to beat some of the Spyderco's, Benchmade's, SOG's, CRKT, and a whole list of production and custom makers we have now days.....way to many to name. CNC machining has been to our advantage because we can get a consistent design well machined, tight fits, sharper blades, and a world of openers and closers for a relatively small outlay of cash.

My first knife was a Buck 110 about 25 years ago or so. I damn near cut my finger once by letting the blade snap shut.

Not my very first knife, but the one that made me lust for more of the same...my Buck 110, purchased around 1979. It was my first locking blade knife. I knew from that day forward I would be looking for more. My next purchase was a radically new (1991) lightweight folder, the Spyderco Endura. Knives have cost me a ton of money since then and I enjoy and use each one.

Alright, good replies so far. The knife that got me back in the fast lane was my Benchmade 551 Griptilian. I've never held anything sharper, and from that moment on I worked on my sharpening skills and became pretty efficient with a smith diamond rod. I've never been able to buy anything less of a knife because of that griptilian.

1] Victorinox - Each one got fatter {early/late 70's}
2] Tekna - The spring loaded plastic sheath was amazing {early 80's}
3] Buck 184 - couldn't afford a Lile {'84}

By then I was hooked.

Gerber LST: first knife, was really happy when I bought it (when EMS sold it to me at the ripe age of 14 even though I wasn't allowed to buy razor blades then)

Factory dull and would NOT take an edge.

Spyderco Calypso Jr Grey VG10. I asked the forumites what to buy, and the Calypso Jr had JUST came out in Grey. Pounced on that. Loving it ever since

yup I sure do. I was 5 years old and living in another country. I saw this beautifull Puma folder with mother of pearl inlaid handles, which my mom proceeded to buy for me. I had it about 3 weeks before I sliced my thumb wide open peeling an orange. Needless to say it was razor sharp and it dissapeared right afterwards.

hey bearcut, whatever happened to that thread you made about the survival kit? It was a nice kit, but I think you deleted it.

I deleted it.

a lot of people ragged on you about it (hopefully I wasn't one of them :)), but I do remember that it had a lot of nice stuff in it. People on that post kept saying for you to bring it back.

Back to the first knives, If anyone would like to post about their first knife, go right ahead.

The first knife that really turned me on to them was a Buck 317 that I talked my mom into buying at a garage sale for $5.00! I've still got it and it's in great shape.

The first knife given to me was by my cub scout leader, he gave us all one when we got our whittling-chip card. It was a blue jigged (i don't know what type of handle material) pocket knife in the boy scouts. Somehow, I lost it, but I always think of it while reading these posts. Ill never be able to replace THAT knife.

The knife that got me hooked was a Queen light hunter that I got for christmas when I was 12. There was a pawn shop in town that I always went into when my mom was shopping on Main st. I had been looking at that knife for months and when I got it that christmas it was the best gift ever. I lost that knife hunting on our family farm when I was 14. I didn't know it, but one of my cousins found it. Four years later we met up one day hunting and I saw my knife. He let me have it back, and I have had it every since.

I got/found my first knife when I was about seven or eight. It was one of those little nail file knives that had the word TRIM stamped on it. I found it, liked it, carried it around for awhile, then my dad found out I had it and took it back. (It was his.) I guess I was pretty upset, because he got me something similar. He dulled the blade on it so I couldn't cut myself with it.

Later in 11th grade, I traded coins & baseball cards for a Case Folding Hunter with a liner lock. Got hooked, and I've been feedin' the habit ever since. I've been buying/trading ever since.

I have managed to keep a written record of most (or all) of the knives I've ever owned.

thx - cpr
