Do you save your coins from purchases?

I save 100% of my change I get back from products or services. Now even though I have plastic, I almost always pay with cash. I put the spare coins in a 1 gallon water container.

I have found this to be a way to purchase knives without even knowing I spent any money.

Anyway I get about $800-$1000 in change per gallon, and paying cash for everything I can, makes it add up fast.

Sounds like a smart way to build the collection, I find paying with cash makes me more conscious about my purchases as well.

Yes. I also do a visual inspection to see what I put in the jar. I still find a few mecury head dimes (rare), wheat pennies, war nickels (rare), etc. I also put aside any half or dollar coins too. Anything that looks out of the ordinary gets googled, checked and put in a seperate container if its worth something (more then face value of course).

Dude I ws just thinking bout cashing mine in. I just recently bought a knife knowing I had my change. I started doing it when I was travelling for work with a bunch of guys one my crew and we constantly had hotels screwing us on our cards. I like you have a jug larger than a gallon thou and I have since my last cash in started adding ones and fives. Hope it puts me over the 1000 mark this time. Another thing I do is always pay with cash even if I have change in my pocket. My wife gives me hell about being a change their/hoarder.

Perhaps not to that extent... but I do have a small catcher that change goes into. Quarters usually go for the carwash/water jug fills, the rest of the catcher usually tops out at about $40-$50.

5 gal water jugs are fun to do, but lord help you if you need to move a full one.

Just don't do large glass jars - the buildup of the microshocks of coins being added can cause sudden breakage. Don't want to have to spend your savings on BandAids. ;)

Yeah, I have been known to sandwich "hide" a $20 in the middle where I can't see it.
I know when the gallon is full I will buy an Extreme Judgment.

Sure, I could order it today with the debit card, but it seems more rewarding, knowing your working towards that knife I smile when I put the change in the jug. :)

Its nice these days if you can make ends meet and still have your have change cache. My wife always wants to steal it. I'm just happy if I get to spend it and don't have some unusual expense come up right about the time my jug is full.

I use a Discover card and pay it off in full each month. They give me anywhere from $15-$40 a month for free. I am on a zero dollar budget so every penny is accounted for. I just have a category for things like knives or whatever.

I seldom spend coins. I save them up in a big bowl. Once a year, the Pregnancy Resource Center, a local Christian organization that offers abortion alternatives and help and counseling for pregnant women, has a fundraiser where they ask people for their spare change. I always have a lot of spare change for them.

You Sir, have just inspired me to adopt this idea.

Thank you!

Did you fill your 5 gal jug,,how long did it take you?

My wife and I save all of our coins (in Canada we have 2$ and 1$ coins) and cash them in when we go on vacation. Usually amounts to the best part of $1000.

I save coins for small purchases and parking meters. I save and keep pennies and have many pounds worth. I started keeping them a few years back when they announced the end of the penny. That law went into effect last month.

I have a little story about that. I used to throw all my change into a 5 gallon pretzyl jug. it was almost 3/4 full when I realized that it was almost all Copper. You see I have a little Brother with sticky fingers. As near as I can tell he clipped me for a couple hundred bucks in silver. The Dummy didn't think I'd ever notice my jug turn into Copper.

No I don't save mine. I usually use a debit card, but when I do get change I use it the next time I use cash. I never let it build up, and never have.

I can only answer some of your question. When I was about ten years old someone broke into our house to steal some goods.
My father at the time had a 5 gallon water jug about two thirds full. The guy must have tried to pick it up but found he could only tip it over. He left almost all the change behind. He did steal mine and my sister's piggy banks which were just emptied and taken to the bank a week prior. His total score from those was around five bucks.

I also save all coins from purchases as well. Usually adds up to around $400 each year. That is my donation to the Rescue Mission.
