I've been doing a little ebaying lately, and I've been ask a few times:
"Do you have a buy it now price?"
Stupid people.

Maybe stupid like a fox

At times it's code-speak, IMO, for "Let's do a deal now".
And anything more detailed than "Do you have a buy it now price?"
would be a dead giveaway that the questioner is trying to evade ebay policy.

Never hurts to ask. It worked for me, once and I got a pretty good deal. But, that was the only time I ever asked, so I don't know if it would have worked again.

Your not breaking policy if there are no bids on the item.....ebay has a lot of backdoors. The seller can choose to sell it at an offered price.

That is usually a sign that the item you are selling is priced way too low.The
do you have a "Buy It Now"? people are trying to get it off the market fast

I dont think this is true at all. You people are missing the WHOLE point. The reason people ask is that they might not be home when your auction goes up and it might be something that they really want. OR, you may have had a "buy it now" and some duche bag hit the starting bid because they were too cheap to "buy it now" and the person may be wanting to know what it was. ALSO as a seller Walking Man, it would be better for you money wise to sell an item outside of ebay because they take 3% of you sale on top of the listing fees and paypal's fees. This is what I do if someone wants to buy one of my items now. We agree on a price. I ask them to paypal me first the amount(and not put the item number on the reciept), once I see the money in the account I end the auction. Sure ebay has your listing fees, but they dont get 3% for the item you sold. Hell its bad enough that paypal takes 3% also. I've done quite a bit of outside transactions and all of them went fine. Just make sure that they have a decent feedback and all should go smoothly.

This is another good point. But you can still end an auction if there are bids. Another good reason (as a seller) to sell to someone that is asking if you have a buy it now is that maybe they are offering you more money than your item will bring. For instance if a person offers you a grand for something and the auction only brings $600, then you just made a terrible mistake. Not only are you going to be wishing that you took the "buy it now" offer, but your obligated to sell it to the winning bidder. OR if you item doesnt sell, and you try to contact that person who made that generous offer, they arent going to want it then. You have to strike while the iron is hot, so to speak.

Very useful to know; thanks for the info.

Also, I'd interpreted the original post to mean something broader:
Sometimes I get people emailing and asking stuff like "Will you take
$100.00 for it?", when there are offers let's say in the 80 range and
a day or two left to go in the auction.
