Do you spend more on knives to support local businesses?

I count myself lucky to have An outstanding local knife dealer. He charges Retail but usually gives A discount at the time of checkout. If you pay cash he usually will give you a larger discount.:):)
I buy As many of my knives from him As I can. I don't sweat the fact that I maybe Able to get my knives 20 OR 30 bucks cheaper online.
The Reason for this is CUSTOMER SERVICE!!
1)He took the effort to Remember Me on a first name basis every time I visit.
2)He maintains All my Knives free of charge. Sharpening, Repair and will send Knives in himself for warranty Repair or service.
3) He took the time to learn what I look for in Knives. When I Stop by he will show the latest new stuff that came in.If something comes in that
he KNOWS I may want he puts it Aside to show me before he puts it out for display.
4)If you don't like the knife, bring it Back, Refund or exchange, no problem.
5) He takes trade-ins. Bored with a couple of your knives? Bring them in.
Trade them for something that strikes your fancy !!

Nuff said :D:D:D

I've got the same thing going with the owner at the shop I hang out in in Rockford. I've helped him set up for shows and bought knives for him too. He gives me breaks on knives that he has marked at retail because he knows I know 20 places on the net that I can get a better deal and he knows I'm only buying from him to help out. When I trade or sell him a custom I let him pay me with store credit cuz I know I'll blow it there anyway.:) Lately I've been buying a couple SAKs when I go in just to buy something. So ya, I'll pay a bit more to help a local out.

If there were a brick and mortar shop near me that fits grasshoppers' description, I would definately shop there in spite of higher prices.

I'll support local shops if the price is generally no more than 10-15% (25% if I really like the place) above what I'd get it elsewhere shipped.

Is it true that you (manufacturers in general) are forcing these stores to keep prices at MSRP? If I didn't feel the guy was lying to me, I might understand, then.

Hi THG,

I can tell you that Spyderco does not "force" B & M stores to charge certain prices.

We have a bigger problems with intenet stores charging too little, which forces B & M stores to stop carrying the product because they cannot compete.

Then the only product readily available B & M stores is the less expensive stuff in the Big Boxes which is usually knives made in China or knives with "lower" cost steels. Not too much S30V, ZDP, VG-10, N690Co or ATS-34 found in Walmart.

I support my local knife shop whenever possible. I like having a store available to me where I can check out the latest and greatest, can't tell you how many times this has saved me from buying a knife on appearance alone. I consider myself very fortunate to have a good stocking dealer so close to home:)

Depends on the deal---Benchmade auto was local-----as were my Cabela's 110 and Griptilian(D2).

Vic Farmers are half the price online as they are locally.

Got a Leatherman knife so cheap locally last Chrismas that nothing online even came close.

New Graham--Grand Prairie---and Ebay are your friends.
