Do you still carry the same pattrrn as your first knife?

Old thread, but an intriguing topic (to me).
This is my first knife, a Colonial Forest-Master from about 1960:

I carried it every day until fall of 1969, and then almost never carried a knife until 5 years ago. Then the pocket knife bug bit me, and I started carrying several knives each day!:rolleyes:
I now carry the Forest-Master for a week about once every 4 months, but I carry at least one scout knife or SAK of some kind every day.
(I'll call that a YES to the question in the thread title. ;))

My first pocket knife was a 1960s SAK. Likely a two-row model like a Spartan or Waiter. It seemed I would buy another one every few years so had a bunch of them accumulate. I still have a couple that date from the 80s and 90s.

No, for me.

Or could say "Sort Of", I guess...

First knife was a SAK knock off, big everything but the kitchen sink kind of knife, in Walnut handles.

For years I did carry a SAK of some kind pretty exclusively, but not anymore.

I do still carry a SAK occasionally, but not the bigger models. But 99% of the time now I carry a two blade jack of some kind or a stockman.

Hmm. Actually... if you count that I do carry a Victorianox Spirit multitool 24/7 no matter what knife I have, then yes. ;)

My first knife was a blue Camillus Cub Scout knife. I've tried carrying a stockman at times, and for about 10 years my carry/dinner preparation/tactical was a Gerber Magnum Hunter lockback, but I keep coming back to the utility pattern. Screwdrivers and awls are very handy to have!

This thread is a blast from the past, for sure. Haven't heard from some of these folks in over a decade.

Howsoever,
My first knife was a two blade equal end jack with carbon steel clip and pen blades.
This is a pattern I seldom carry today. If a knife doesn't have a sheepsfoot or similar blade, I'm unlikely to carry it.

I'm not even sure I remember my first knife very clearly. I'm thinking it was a cheap Tourist Shop special with something like Daniel Boone or Davy Crockett on it. It's hard for me to remember as my Dad would confiscate the knived he would find, so I never had them very long. My first real knife was either an Old Timer or Uncle Henry stockman bought at the local hardware/feed store. I carried those the most when I was younger. Today I mostly carry small jack knives, so I guess my answer has to be "No, I don't still carry the same pattern."

Not for me. The first knife I remember me using with any regularity was a cheap Pakistani 110 copy. Shortly after, I got a buck lite boy scout knife. I still have it. And while large lockbacks hold a dear place in my heart, I tend to carry stockman more than others with improved trappers a close second. I like the utility of having a straight edge and sharp tip along with a nice big clip with some belly.

I do not even know what the pattern was of the first knife that I ever carried . I can remember playing Splits in 1952 with both a Single Blade Jack and a Double Bladed Equal Ended knife and I have no idea how I got them . Now I usually carry a Jack of some sorts , not that I dis-like the others , and then it depends on what I am planning on doing that day . The right tool for the job kind of thing .

My very first knife, still have it, was some cheap yellow handled jack knife my Dad got me at the County fair. My first knife with any sort of quality was a Camillus Cub Scout knife. After that I bought an Old Timer 34OT. So I guess you could say yes, I carry a Victorinox Swiss Army knife a lot that would be a Scout pattern and a stockman on a very regular basis.

My first knife was a SAK Camper that is long gone. I strongly prefer multiple blades in my traditional knives, but not as many as that SAK had!

Mine was a SAK camper as well, carried from age 10 until my early 20's when I lost it. Bought a tinker to replace it, got bit by the tacticool bug, then went back to traditionals, few months ago. A Vic tinker sees regular carry still, and I carry an extra one in my tool bag at work. So guess its a yes from me.

My first pocketknife that I can remember was a blue handled Cub Scout pocketknife (brand unknown), got it circa 1963 - I haven't seen it since the late 1960's (it went to a younger brother when I received a BSA Official Scout knife in 1966). I haven't seen the BSA Official Scout since the early 1970's (it also went to a younger brother). Try as I may and irregardless of the usefulness of design, the Scout Knife pattern has never been, nor ever will be, my EDC pocketknife. I got my first Stockman (a Buck 301) while in HS in 1973 and have pretty much carried a Stockman pattern ever since - probably own 75 or so Stockman pattern knives now and love them all! OH

My first knife was a Barlow given to me by my Dad in 1948. I don't have that Barlow; however, I do have several Barlow knives and carry one frequently.

It's been 60 some years since my Dad gave me my first Barlow, and I've acquired & carried "a few" Barlows since then, in addition to other patterns. Barlows with saw cut bone covers though just seem, well.....right. They're my favorite traditional pattern.

In addition to the very first SAK I owned, another pocket knife that I remember from childhood was a (probably cheap) Barlow knife, with the word "Barlow" on the bolster, and dark reddish sawcut handles, which if I remember were some form of plastic. It was not my knife per se, but rattled around in first the tool drawer in the kitchen and later in the tackle box for when my father and I went fishing once in a while. That was actually before the first pocket knife I owned myself.

And I am guessing that some memory of that old Barlow is what attracted me to that pattern when I first got into knives as a hobbyist 6 years ago, because I remember shopping around for Case Barlows at that time and finding two new old-stock at my local Case Platinum dealer, which I snagged at higher-than-Internet prices at the time.

And also, I do still carry Barlow patterns to this day.

My first knife that I can remember was an SAK, which I no longer carry. I also had a cheap dagger and sheath from my uncle that I tried to sharpen on a flint stone. I loved those knives, but I don't have anything like them now.

Umm.. sort of? The first knives I had real solid memory of 'owning' were an imperial hobo scout and a knock off swiss army style knife that I got when I was four. And got it taken away an hour later because I stabbed myself. (Cut toward the dumbass, remember?) 4 is a bit young for an actual sharp knife. Maybe.
I enjoy a regular scout pattern quite a lot now, does that count?
Also still have that ol hobo knife 30 years on, now.. Thanks, dad!
