Do you still have your first knife?

At first I thought, “no, that gerber ultra light is long gone,” but then I remembered that Dad bought me that only after I’d asked my mom to buy me these fishing clippers at Caldor’s. They contained a knife blade which is what I was really interested in. (For the record, I replaced that ultra light a couple times, and still have one.)

In the picture below, you’ll see the first knife that was bought for me (grade school), followed by one of the first two knives I bought (8th grade), followed by the first knife I bought second hand (34 years old).

My first knife was a crappy multi tool and pliers combo that I received as a gift when I was about seven or eight. Over the next couple of years I used it very frequently, and eventually removed every single tool and blade from the pliers housing during my “tinkering”.

It’s now scratched to death, and only the pliers remains, but it’s still vaguely functional, and I have it in a cardboard box in a closet.

At some point early in my ownership of it, I got the bright idea to cut a hole in what was my family’s trampoline at the time. No reason, I just wanted a square hole.

I proudly showed my parents, “Look what I did!”

That was the end of my knife usage for a while.
Similar story, my mother gave me a cheap multi tool pliers, key chain size (smaller than my every day SAK!) for my 15th birthday. I still have it. One of those form the cheap no brand souvenir box with a fake leather wallet.

The blade on that thing couldn't even cut butter, and sharpened it and yet it couldn't keep an edge. The can opener barely works, scissors is thick yet short. The pliers/wire cutters work ok.

We were poor back then and I appreciate it. It was the tool for the whole house at the time, too. I bought actual tools a few months later with my cash from summer job though. Still never dare to lose that scrap.

I was living with my grandfather around 1987 when my father gifted me a SAK. I never really used it that much which is why it still has the toothpick/tweezers.;) So it just traveled with me from one residence to another over the years.

I believe I purchased my first knife sometime around 2010. I was late to the game as usual. It was a Gerber FAST Draw from a local sports store. I gave it to a co-worker a little later.

I was 4 when dad bought and gave me a brand new camp/scout knife. Might have been a Camp King or a Colonial I don't remember. I do remember that when we got home from the city, with no instruction about safety or anything from dad, I was happily slaying Milkweeds, chopping them down left and right, until my uncoordinated 4 year old left hand didn't get out of the way the slashing knife held in my right. Crying I went to mom, who, stopped the bleeding, bandaged my hand, swatted me repeatedly on the tail to " give me something to cry about". Then took my knife! I never have seen it again😭

I had beautiful Buck folder as a kid, with brass bolsters, a clip point blade, and a second fold out heavy duty crosscut saw that got the most use (great for shingle bindings). I lost it when I was out on exercise with the military at the age of 18. The knife was securely in my KFS pouch on my webbing and the pouch blew off my webbing while I was pepper potting across the Prairies. It was a sad loss and I never found another one like it. Hopefully it found a good home, if it ever got discovered before the weather destroyed it. It was how I learned that "military grade" means: made by the lowest and/or most corrupt bidder.

I got a Buck 110 a few years ago, but it's just not the same. There's no heavy duty crosscut saw and the brass bolsters seem to get tarnished much faster than the older Buck knives. I also remember carrying my Buck knife everywhere, including school; something that these days would likely get you expelled and/or on a no fly list. :-) It wasn't considered that different from carrying a comb or a pen everywhere you went.

Purchased from an ad in the back of a 1971 issue of Boys Life magazine. Me and a friend saved up our lunch money, put it in an envelope, and mailed it off. Man, I remember the anticipation for this thing to arrive. We were both 10 years old.

I still have it but it looks rough. It’s a Buck Scoutlite my dad gave me when I was 12. I reground it and kept using it. I did an abysmal job regrinding so it looks like Fido’s butt.

I’m sure its been asked before but how old were you? Make? Model? Do you still have it? Any special memories of using it?

I was in kindergarten in the late 70’s. About 3-4 years old. I had a case small stockman that my dad bought me. Brown delrin handle. Still make them. I believe i still have it somewhere. Don't remember losing it.

Asked before? Look a few posts down....

5 or 6.
It was in 1960 or 1961. My uncle, Bob, gave me his issue Demo Knife when on leave from Vietnam to his next duty station in Germany.

Sadly it is long gone. It vanished when my parents got divorced in '66. I believe my mum gave it, my bicycle, and pretty much all my toys to my future step brother. At least she didn't give him my Ithica Model 49 "Saddle Gun", and the H&R .410 break open shotgun I inherited from my paternal grandfather in '63 or '64. 😁

I think about this frequently and wish I would have kept it. My first big boy knife was a ZT0350. I sold it early on when I was new to the hobby and constantly wanting to try new stuff out. I’ve thought about buying a new one, but it wouldn’t be the same.

The first knife is long lost but....I have the one I bought with my First job money earned.
I can't post any pics because the apps need safari 12.? to download! Ideas?

Nope. My little blue Cub Scout knife got abused from ‘72 till about ‘80. It was in such a sorry state at that point that I pitched it into the woods never to be seen again.
