Do You Take Time To Exercise Daily?

Quiet Storm, first of all I want to sincerly thank you for taking the time to write up that training schedule. I hope you'll understand when I tell you that I know my body, I know where I want to go, and how to get there. I have read and tried other expert opinions on how to increase running speeds and distance (including Bill Rogers). Though logical and well planned out, I didn't make decent progress following them. I do much better following my own schedule. But, I don't want you to think for a second that I don't appreciate your time and expertise.

Trout Tamer, thank you for your inspiriting post. I think it would be hard for anyone to complain about the initial aches and pains a body could feel when the first start exercising, compared to the life changing pains you've had to endure.

Congratz to you on how far you've come, may your healing be complete and your pains a distant memory.

Thanks again.
Thank you for the vote of confidence and your blessing concerning my new leg, PhilL :)

My next goal is to walk my dog more frequently. I know I said I walk him 3x/week. Well, that's my goal :o which was happening up 'til a couple weeks ago. The thing is, he and I both really need the walking. It's simply a matter of scheduling and willpower. I think I can, I know I can...

I'm always amazed at how effective and energizing simply walking becomes after a bit of dedication to it. It's one of those healthy addictions

Good to be reminded that I need to and can "get off and get on".

Ass and feet, respectively of course.

A friend of mine was kind enough to send me this little reminder of how important it is to get regular exercise.

Have exercised for many a year. I do sit in a chair because my back is easily hurt after 2 failed spinal surgeries .

Curling, side to side , wrist strengtening & outstretched curls for at least ten minutes at 60 per minute is a great workout. I'm 6'2" & weigh 209 after a big breakfast. At almost 78 I have such a grip than & can make much younger men yell "uncle "

I do 2-5 minute sessions in the afternoon too. My VA doctor is amazed at my vitality.I almost always feel well & have an euphoric feeling after each session.

Works for me !

Uncle Alan :)

It's best to plan ahead.

I should, I really should, but I don't.
I swear, I'll start, but I had surgery two months ago. I did exercise a good bit one day, couldn't get up the next morning.

It sounds like you did a bit too much. Do less, but do something. If it hurts the next day when you walk around the block, then just trying walking to the corner and back for a few days. Eventually your body will adapt and you'll be able to do a little more and go a little further. Just remember if you've been attached to your easy chair than just getting out of it is something.

For any that complain about the pain after a workout or use the pain as an excuse not to start at all, Please read Trout Tamer's first post on this thread and imagine his pain. Stop being a pussy.

Excuses are like arseholes, everybodies got one. If you're tired of being fat. If you're sick and tired of being sick and tired, GET UP...DO SOMETHING. You'll be feeling a lot better if you do.

I weighed in this morning at 197.4, down a solid 1 pound since this time last week. I had to dial back the exercise a bit this week due to a lingering cold that I'm trying to shake, so I've been doing long walks (~5 miles) instead of running or jumping on the bike. Still hitting the gym, though, but this week I only went at about 50% effort there.

All in all, I still hit my daily goal of 3,000 - 3,500 calories burned this week. I just did it by not beating on my body quite so much.

Anyway, a pound a week is my goal, and I'm right on track.

How you all doing?

I work out every day. Heavy weights, low reps, I pretty much revolve everything around it. I eat 6000 calories a day in hopes to get bigger and I'm still losing weight.

Wack 500 cals out of your diet every day, and continue with the exercise that you're doing, and you'll lose the weight.

Sounds like you're at close to break even on the cal input/output equation.

On May 6, 2008 I started my low carb diet and my walking program. My starting weight was 236 lbs. and I'm 5'10". My ultimate goal weight is 180 lbs. My first goal is to get to 215 lbs. which for me is one pound under obese. That's an ugly word to deal with, but being over 56 lbs over weight is even uglier to look at, and real hard on the body.

This morning I did my usual 2 1/2 miles in the park, in 32 minutes. I jogged 1/2 mile in 6 minutes, walked then jogged the rest of the way. I'm probably jogging about 1/3 of the time.

My weight this morning is 217 lbs. that's a 19 pound loss and i'm 2 pounds away from my first goal (of 215).

The weight loss has slowed, as expected. It's time to make changes. I'll be switching from low carb diet to the ABS diet, which will add a lot more carbs and fiber to my diet. I'm also expecting to feel an increase in energy, which I'm going to need. I plan to increase the intensity of my exercise. Which would first mean increasing the amount of time jogging vs. walking. Then later instead of jogging to do some running. Even now I finish my 2 1/2 miles by running the last 100 yards.

I'm really pleased at how well my first month went. I'm looking forward to my next workout, and the change in my diet. Have I mentioned I FEEL GREAT?

Hey Coug, you could say I'm just as Dense, but I've got a bit less Volume. :D

Hey, no problem at all. :)

Sounds like you're at close to break even on the cal input/output equation.

Yup, that seems to be the problem.

Heavy weights/low reps build muscle, muscles burn calories. Light weights/high reps work muscular endurance, which isn't nearly as effective for weight loss. Regularly training to failure is not helpful.

If you have any questions regarding an efficient lifting program geared towards achieving your goals, just ask and I'll try to help answer them.

Steel Ghost,
Great honesty there, and I have gone through the same feelings.
A friend of mine, who a year and a half ago was 350+ pounds, stuck in a wheelchair had, and does have, the same sentiments as you have. He has had a lifelong experience with polio of one of his legs. The last time I saw him we were discussing the lack of equipment for cardio workouts for people who don't have typical range of motion.

He revealed in a phone call to me he is now 215 pounds, and is starting a weight training program for his upper body. He attributes his weight loss to portion control, he eats the same as he always has and as often, just less of it. He is out of his chair most of the time. His motivation to exercise is still low, but his overall attitude about life in general has risen considerably.

For myself, I am now in California, after transferring from China, to Florida, and then to San Diego. I will be here for another week or so, and the hotel I am in is on top of a hill. Every day I walk down the fairly steep hill and up twice a day, a total of two measured miles. After reading the updates on this post, I will add a longer loop, I have not measured it in time or distance yet, but it is an unavoidable up and down ring around a hill. I have not bought a flexible measuring tape yet, but intend too. The brief feeling of "getting it" I have a couple of weeks ago is gone, my motivation minimal, and that is attributed to the jet lag and natural desire for the path of least resistance. I trod onward, and thank you guys for the inspirational boost.
