Do you think Spyderco would drill pocket clip holes on the Military?

I carry Left pocket tip up. The Military is a sweet large knife that I would already own if it had the option of putting the clip in this position.
Just wondering if anyone knew if I sent one to Spyderco if they would drill holes for me where I want them?

Thanks,
John

I can't say for certain, but I'd bet against it. There is nothing there for the screws to anchor in but G-10, which really doesn't hold threads all that well.

Yab-
Youre the spydie expert, so Im glad you responded. I thought that the Military had full steel liners that the holes could go into and be tapped for screws.
darn it, Im not surprised.
It looks like the PM2 is all ready to go for the pocket clip to be moved to the position I like. When I get it.
Thanks,
John

Yep, the PM2 has 4 way clip option, but the Military only has partial, skeletonized nested liners. For many years, it only had one partial liner, but they added a second partial starting with the BG-42/CF Sprint, but even so they only extend about halfway down the handle.

I can say with 100% certainty, I wouldn't carry the Military tip up, even if it came with a 4 way clip. Sal knew exactly what he was doing when he designed it the way he did. I'm also glad that it doesn't have a deep carry clip. I really don't like them as you have to fish around for your knife.

It would still be tip down, and he wants tip up. Some people prefer that. I'm not one of them, though.

I'm gonna say no they won't , but some people on here might do it for you, if you dont have a drill and tap yourself. I prefer tip up carry always if possible on my knives, but the millie is the exception, I don't believe I would carry it tip up even if it were an option, something about the way it carries.. I dunno, I love it

I doubt it. On the plus side, if you have the tools and a little bit of know how, drilling the holes in the G10 and the liners (have to tapped/threaded) is a pretty simple job.

Except that there are no liners in the area where he wants the screws, just G-10 or carbon fiber. Unless he goes for the boat anchor...excuse me, the all titanium model. It would be pretty simple on that one.

There are ways to insert steel female threaded inserts into G10 so you can attach pocket clip screws. The Kershaw Echelon for example uses this technique.

You could also just send it to fellow forumite STR for a clip. It does not have to be the low rider variety if you prefer a more traditional clip. In my case he just screwed directly into the G10. He said if it ever strips send it back and he'll re-work with a metal backing to screw the threads into. He also said if I don't take the clip on and off too much it should last just as is. I tend to agree, I haven't had a problem with it yet. I've never taken the clip off and it's rock solid.

Surprisingly I feel like the military carries great tip down. I think it's likely due to the light weight for such a big knife.

No offense intended but I have never understood this line of thinking. If the knife is carried on my right side with it all the way in the back of my pocket toward my hip it could not open tip up. If it is tip down and I fall or something, it could open up inside my pocket and stab me in the inner thigh or groin? Likely, no I admit it is not but I don't understand how I would be cut at all tip up. People must be carrying them differently than me and I can't see it. I have been carrying an Endura for so long I don't even bother to buy a knife that is tip down because I know I will not carry it. I would love a tip up Military and might send one to STR now that I think about it.

I'm not sure that it is ,completely, a matter of the blade opening while in pocket. Obviously, with a long blade, that is of some concern, but even more concerning is the fact that someone would want to carry a military tip-up. I understand different strokes for different folks, and I have some knives that I carry tip up, but the military does not lend itself to be carried tip-up. I have a tip-up millie (got it in a trade) and it feels like the most unnatural carry option if ever there was an unnatural carry option for a particular knife. IMO, the only reason to carry a military tip-up is if it is waved in some manner.

I carry mine in the front corner of my right back pocket. I have had several tip up knives open in cargo and jacket pockets when the clip failed to hold them securely against the side of the pocket. None of those experiences were enjoyable, nor did they endear tip up carry to me.

Ahah! So if I understand you correctly you are carrying it opposite of me which is why you like it the other way. I cannot imagine, nor can i say I have ever seen anyone carry a tactical folder toward the front of their right front pocket (closest to the zipper) it has always been in the right front closest to rear pocket.

If safety is not an issue then why is a military tip up the least bit "concerning." It is slightly larger than the Endura which I have been carrying tip up for years. Why wouldn't I want to carry it the same way as my Endura and my Manix XL? Why would I want to open it backwards? Muscle memory and all that.

The Endura is a backlock. The backlock provides a much stronger detent than the ball on a linerlock.

Yeah I understand that, but that would apply to safety I would think. I was trying to understand why Knab said this

"I understand different strokes for different folks, and I have some knives that I carry tip up, but the military does not lend itself to be carried tip-up. I didn't understand the "doesn't lend itself to tip up" thus the Endura comparison. If safety and accidental opening is not his reason then I wondered what was. The only two reasons I have heard previous to this post were safety and personal preference.
