Do you think you could

It’s really not a question of could you purely get by with a few because I’m certain that answer is a solid yes but being content for knife enthusiasts is the question. I figured going into this thread, most collectors whether they use some but collect more or not, would be a resounding NO. Even the pure utilitarian owners might be iffy on the number but might state their proposed number and think through their normal uses for a blade. It’s not important, just a thought provoking topic.

Bark River Bravo 1 LT 3V,
Condor Bushcraft Parang,
Victorinox Cybertool Lite.

But to be more realistic:
Spyderco Chaparral Maple, Native 5 fluted CF S90V, Native Chief CF S90V, Military Fluted Ti, Tasman SE, Caribbean Sheepfoot SE,
Victorinox Cadet, Alox Harvester, Alox Mini Champ, Explorer Plus, Spirit butterknife, Swisscard Lite, Cybertool Lite
Bark River ULB, PSK, Aurora 2, Gunny Hunter, Kephart 4" in 3V
Condor Mini Duku, Bushcraft Parang
Cold Steel Bushman
Hultafors GK

So, 20-ish. :)
A man’s got to know his limitations or so Clint Eastwood says

Good point. For me I was content not collecting knives for the majority of my life. I could easily just find something else to get into and be content with three knives again in the future. I was really into watches for a long time (still am to some extent) but I’ve gotten to the point where I wear one watch about 95% of the time.

Yes I think so.

My collection have been up to 130 knives and I ave already sold most of it
I am down to +/- 30 now

If I consider wat I do with my knives I really need a fixed blade, a folder for the fun and a slip joint for legal carry

I will pick an Esee for my fixed blade, either a 4HM or a 6HM
A Koenig Arius textured CF will be my folder of choice, and a CRK Impinda will be my slip joint

A leuku, a puukko, and an opinel for food... probably.

Although I also really enjoy having a flipper clipped in my pocket for regular every day use. So 4 knives for me but there would be axes too.

A Victorinox Huntsman, a Mora in carbon steel, and a Case medium stockman or jackknife in carbon steel is all I would want or need. It is really more about what you do with the tools you have.

I could get by with 3 knives if I had to. I would prefer more though. An SAK or multi tool, a modern knife like my Cold Steel 4Max Scout, and a fixed blade like my Buck 105 or Cold Steel Pendleton Hunter. That's my answer for today, tomorrow might be different.

Went fishing today. Carried my usual. Small Sebenza clipped in my cargo shorts pocket, Busse SAR 3 in kydex and a MKM Mikro in the bottom of my shorts pocket just cause they were all there when I put the shorts on. Caught nothing to brag about. My side by side has a Busse BATAC in a sheath that constantly resides Tywrapped to the headache rack. There is a folding razor knife in the toolbox in back so I am way over the limit. But I could do it, I just know I could : )
Edit: wait, there was a filet knife and a multi tool in my tackle box. Busted

I think I could make it with five.

Who was it said "I refuse to maintain a monogamous relationship with a knife"?

Philosophically, I like these questions because they make me think about my collection, but the simple fact is that it's a collection. If something checks off the boxes for "I like it", then I buy it, even though I have probably at least three knives that can fulfill my "needs" in almost every of the categories I've defined for myself.

Just... don't make me find a name and model of knife for each category. I've beat that list to death!

Depends on your hobbies I suppose. I made it several years young and broke elk hunting with a POS Remington folder (unusable saw and gut hook, combo blade),an old timer stockman and a SAK spartan. Cleaned plenty of trout, some birds and rabbits with the stockman and the spartan. Looking back on it I wish I had known more about knives, life would have been a bit easier. But knowing what I know now about knives I could probably get by with a Benchmade hidden canyon, Remington R2 and a SAK Yeoman.

I still use the same stockman and its only purpose in life is to cut the membrane between the gut sack and the body behind the guts. My finger fits on the tip perfectly so I can feel my through the cut without a larger knife bouncing around back there.

Cheers,

Was down to a couple until I joined here and got hooked. Up to 7 with 3 good EDC's. Like what I bought but when the newness thrill wears out another one always catches my eye. Fun to own and buy!

My knives are tools for me. I don’t have nor could I get by with one flat head screwdriver. That holds true for most of my hand tools. Having a selection of tools to chose from, makes life easier. So, no, I could not make just a few knives work for everything I do daily. Like my tools, I prefer a good quality knife.
