Do you use/carry your Limited editions?

Evening all,

So I'm curious. How many of you collect the LE's or any Benchmades that are limited runs and how many of you actually use them?

I ask because I have a few limited editions and I always told myself I would use them, so I have. Collecting is fun and all, but I enjoy putting them to use like the tools they are. With that said, I just received a limited green/black mini-barrage which was a shot show exclusive, and it's brand spanking new, compliments of a generous soul here on Blade Forums. I want to use it so badly, but this is one of the first knives I can truly say I love the appearance of, the smooth feel, etc... I don't see them for sale very often and now I'm struggling because I love the blade material, the length, everything about it.

I really WANT to use it. But I'm having second thoughts because I have an attachment to it that I haven't felt with other knives in a LONG time!

So again I ask. Do you use your limited/sprint run knives? Or just collect them?

Usually, I don't. I keep even discontinued model and don't use it often. I like current production / annual unlimited/limited that is affordable and make them a EDC / user.

Most of the time I don't use my Limited's. If I like the model well enough I'll buy the regular production version. In a few cases I will buy a couple of Limited's, like the Shot Show 585-1, and keep the lower number NIB.

I do exactly as jkarp does. But, I'm always admiring the LE's with a lot of fondling. I think I'd throw up if I lost or scratched one. I have knives to use and knives to just look at and pass on to my kids one day. Just my crazy way of doing it.

I wouldnt do anything but use them. They made enough of them to where you can always find another if you're that bad off and have to have it.
I don't think the resale value trumps the fun of putting them to good use.
My AFCK 806-1101, 14205, and Mini Onslought SHOT 746 are worth more to me as users than their resale value LNIB.
And the 755 MPR (I think may be disco'd) is another one of my HD users that I LOVE.

I'm on the side I use all mine. The ones I don't get sold off. I find when I use them I appreciate and like them that much more. It's like my watches. I enjoy using and seeing them on and with me.

If you get more enjoyment keeping it pristine then go for it.

I know how you feel OP, but think about it this way. This may be morbid, but take it for what it is. What if you died tomorrow. Would you regret not using the knife? Time is precious and you never know how much of it you have left. Enjoy it to the fullest.

With that said if you can get the same amount of enjoyment from keeping it in mint condition then do that if you feel it is right.

Thanks all. It's interesting to see how many varying opinions there are on the subject.

I've always considered myself a collector of everything I'm interested in. However when it comes to guns and knives, I just want to use everything. This knife and maybe 1 or 2 guns have been the exception and I always felt weird about that.

With that said, I carried the Mini LE Barrage out to dinner tonight and it's on me right now.I won't heavily use it to pry or anything, but I think normal day to day use will be just fine. Haven't had to use it yet, but I think it'll give me true pleasure to actually USE the knife as it was intended. I don't want a show room full of knives with no purpose! (But with that said, I'm sure I'll find some knives eventually that I'll just hold on to.)

Keep a jarbenza for the next time you need a screw driver and don't have one.

I bet you thought about, and enjoyed it more, having it on you than in the safe.

If I own it, I carry it. My knife family has been shrinking lately because of that. I don't keep backups now and I only get LEs that have something I want to use, like a specific blade steel.

Actually, I carry way more LE's than I do standard production models, 20 to 1.
Better steel is what attracts me.
I own very few standard models, lots and lots of LE's and I use them all.

I think I should clarify.

LE = limited edition. One offs and discontinued Gold class. Most of them seems to be less than 1000 and more price than regular production. Since a lot of them are already discontinued, unless I like the steel (CPM-M4, M390, S90V, S110V, etc) I wouldn't get it.

ULE = Unlimited limited edition. Strange one. It seems to indicate minimum of 1000 and a year? I like this category and purchased many this year.

So, ULE can be affordable to buy more than 1. This can have your "spare parts". Although jkarp's idea is higher in cost per benefit.

That's one way of putting it. And yeah, my 'cost per benefit' has been on the Kabosh for months...not that I need many more to satisfy the urge, mind you. ;)

Oh yes, I carry my very best Gold Class Benchmades. Who better to enjoy these great knives than me. Yep, I carry great knives.

I think I have like 25LEs to 5 regular productions benchmades. I use them all. I can't stand to have a knife I won't use. I recently had to sell my 940D2CF Prototype because I couldn't bring myself to use it, it was nice to have but I didn't like it sitting in a case doing nothing. Using them is how I enjoy them.

I carry mine just like any other knife I have. Unfortunately I recently had my 806 limited edition stolen while I was at the gym. But, I prefer to include most of my knives in my EDC rotation.

I carry this one every day. Even though it's a first production run, (number 179 of 250)
If it's nice I want to use it, not save it in perfect condition for somebody else that may not appreciate it after I'm gone. ;)

I carry mine, but only on special occasions. I wouldn't own one that I couldn't at least occasionally carry and use. This is why I don't own any gold class knives - they're mostly pointless show pieces that I'd never have reason to carry, let alone use.

Thanks all. Just to follow up, since I received the specific knife in question, I've been carrying it daily. I haven't even rotated my other knives in. I love this little barrage. Though I have an M390 mini-ritter with Wilkinson TI scales coming. That'll definitely see use too.

I do enjoy using them, limited or not. All my other Limited or special editions are used for the most part at least a little. (My definition of used is anything I've held, carried (even if not used) or touched paper.) The only knife I have never even touched to paper is the Benchmade Griptilian I received from my last unit I was in prior to getting out of the Army. It just means a lot to me.

Picture is not showing wear as well as in person. Maybe I need to beat it more.
