Do you use Pointy knives?

Pointy knives dont have much use for EDC other than self defense. But I do happen to like the way my ti lite pierces everyday objects like bubblewrap or cardboard with no resistance at all. But I dont think anyone would argue that a ti lite's blade is designed for SD.

Because I love the pricky feel in the morning.
Seriously, yes. So long as I remember which end is which.

That's complete bullsh*t. I use the point of my knives all the time to open things. Probably use the tip of the blade more than anything else.

Knives with a sharp point are a necessity for my EDC's. The tip and the first half inch gets more use than any other part of the knive. Maybe you are refering more about the overall shape of the blade being slender and pointy ( ie dagger shaped ), not the tip itself ??

used to edc an emerson collectors assoc. persian tactical w/a zero bevel grind on it cant get much pointier than that imho. worked just fine for edc also.

I'm liking the stabby point on my LCC more and more each day.

I just picked up a Spyderco Ronin, and that's got to be just about the stabbiest knife ever made, short of an X-acto. I'm apprehensive about the tip though, it seems rather breakable.

I've always prefered a deep clip point or wharncliffe over a big belly.

I also like my ti-lite. I also like my larger fixed blades to have nice, pointy, clip points.
I am sad that my 710 is not as pointy as it used to be.
If I had to choose between a pointy knife and a tanto for EDC, I would definately go pointy.

PS: Have you seen the new Onion/Centofante collaboration from Kershaw? That is one pointy wharncliffe!

Timmy, all knives are considered pointy, and yes, of course the point is useful. I think the original thread is referring to knives that are more "pointy" than average. IE, stilletos, daggers, etc. Knives made specifically for stabbing.

There you're dead wrong, I use pointy knives all the time, trimming gaskets, cutting and trimming food, lots of stuff.

If there ever comes a time where I can only legally buy non-pointy blades, I'm buying my first slack belt grinder. :grumpy:

Yeah. Thinking about it, all my folding knives are kinda "pointy". I especially like the spear-points by Al Mar and the almost needle-pointed Spyderco Delicas and Enduras. I'm not at all a fan of blunted points and sheepsfoot knives. Knives should be able to pierce as well as cut, even when not considering their use as weaponry.

hey, nothing works better then kershaw mini-task when you have to get a splinster out of your finger ;)

Same for me - I tend to use the point to get my cut started. Things like removing slivers, clipping out newspaper articles, etc - use the point. Most of my stuff is fairly pointy. Other shapes like a sheepsfoot have their uses. I just took delivery of my BM 550 and I ordered it in BM's interpretation of a sheepsfoot, and even it's got a pretty good point on it.

I havent a Single non-pointy knife. (with the exception of a machete). My original post was about the suggested "pointy knives ban" in the UK. I edited it when I realized that fifty other people had also started identical threads. Maybe it was a good thing, since it hasnt gotten moved like the others. This thread seems to have gotten alot of good response just with the rhetorical question in the title.

Pointy knives are far more useful than rounded or blunted knives. I wonder how many knife knuts (or Chefs) would want to live in England if they pass the "safety scissors for all" law?

I use the tip of my knives for alot of fine cutting tasks that The belly of the blade just isnt precise enough for. the tip also can start a cut by piercing the material. Try that with a rounded off "safety knife"- it is impossible.

Bottom line is: I LOVE POINTY KNIVES! :D

A point is infinitely useful for making fine, controlled cuts- I would not EDC a knife that doesn't have some kind of point!

a non-pointy knife has its uses, they are quite limited. At least some point would be necessary for pretty much anyone's EDC. Even a almost rounded sheepsfoot is better than nothing.

I too love pionty knives. My ole AFCK, 941, and Police come to mind as EDC knives in my rotation that have nice pointy blades. I find that the point is frequently the most used part of my knives. My only complaint against my Camillus EDC and my Benchmade 630 is the fact that the tips do not allow you to do some fine tasks quite as well, cleaning under your nails for example. :o I also have a Ronin, and that tip IS sharp. I do not think I have ever had a knife with a tip that wanted to cut so aggressively. It is incredible!
So in a nutshell, I like pointy knives. On the other hand, I can find something to love about most any well made knife. That is why I am always in the doghouse. ;)

I believe the original post was in response to the posts about the new UK laws banning large pointy knives.
